Boett rug or similar..remember to electric fence off any scratching places or sharp objects
Net Tex Sweet Itch Salve..messy but effective especially for around the face and sheath
Stable fan..midges can't fly in windy conditions or out 24/7 in an exposed field
Make sure the horse is kept well away from any water sources ie streams, ponds etc, the muckheap and trees.

its vile, my yearling has it to, she is sobold and scurfy, im using alo vera, sudo creme and zinc and castor oil, any thing you put on babies u can use, but next year i will rug her, im sure it will cum 2 an end soon wen the weather changes.

Boett, Net-tex Itch Stop Salve, Kill Itch from Carr Day and Martin, and in the feed... Skratch from Global Herbs is popular, we use Think Fly! which doesn't quite stop it on the very bad mare, but definitely keeps the flies off.

Everything that everyone else has said- plus Homeopathic drops. These people prepare them and they are about £30 for at least a season's worth- I have half left from last year. http://www.allergy.org.uk/index.htm

I gave them a ring and explained that I wanted something for sweet itch and they sent me two dropper bottles in the post and jobs a good'un. They work brilliantly (for mine)

same here, ive had horses 4 years and never had a sweetich one, until i breed my own foal, how cum i wonder why she went all summer without it then mine just got it 2 weeks ago , how cum, it is only a summer thing though in it, thank god .. xxxx

tbh, these days its almost all year round if its a severe case. Winters just aren't cold enough these days to kill off all the midges.

avon skin so soft too....and all of the above, ive got a horse wth it, first time ever, its the weather and for me, the yad (by streams) moving him this weekend and hoping itll help!

When I lived in Surrey I was on the verge of having my cob PTS. He was miserable almost all year despite a Boett etc. I moved to Devon 4 yrs ago. He is in a field high up the valley overlooking the sea and now doesn't even wear a Boett. If I bring him down to the yard he immediately starts to scratch. Obviously everyone can't make such a drastic move but choose a field if you can that is as exposed/high up as possible, far away from the muckheap and /or water..

honeypots we stay in Aberdeenshire so not always the hottest spot in the UK....LOL. Thanks for all your suggestions. This mare is a 4 year old and we have never had a problem with it and her before.................but she is very very itchy......poor love.......

Thanks for all your responses and the web address as well. Heres hoping we can get something that will relieve it for her......

boett all the way, my connemara has horrific sweetitch and with the boett and the vaccine trials weve managed to keep a mane on him this year.

vaccine may become available to the public next year.

Boet rug definatly, joshy uffers severly from it and the rug has mad a huge difference. Also try and get on the vaccine trial.
He is on it at the moment and althougth the improvement isnt immence it has helped.
Give the sweet itch society a call they are really helpful, they will give you lots of good advice and you can also buy some lotions at potions from them that do work.
Good luck
