Bud has mild sweet itch, mainly just affects middle part of his mane which he likes to rub, last year wasn't too bad as he was on box rest for quite alot of the summer time.

I want to get him a rug for this year - prevention better than cure etc - but i haven't got masses of money to spend so crosses Boet off.

I was think about Rambo hoody?? or the Pagony one http://www.divoza.co.uk/product6981.aspx

Has anyone got one it seems very reasonable and suitable for mild suffers??

Any other reasonable priced options/suggestions??

Thanks

Ive got an Amigo one which is fab for the price

ooo right do they just do one sort? is there link to one you've got - bought cheap fly rug but that was total waste of money so want next step up without breaking bank!!

Sweet Itch from Horseware - it's fab and properly covers the most affected bits unlike someothers!

rather than buying a rug why don't you treat the cause. Global herbs super skratch is excellent cleared my pony of sweet itch in two weeks saved a fortune on rugs etc

That Pagony version of the Boett looks interesting - what a price difference! I would be interested to hear if anyone has used it.

Thats just what I was thinking. It didn't mention specific protection from midges - maybe thats the catch?

I use the Rambo protector for mild sweetitch, seemed to work last year (before he had it on the skin was broken and bleeding, and after a few weeks it all cleared up)

Well do you think this is the same rug???

http://www.solva-icelandics.co.uk/pagony.htm

its more money but looks the same and write up says its economy for mild sufferers??

It is the same - Pagony is Divoza's own brand (Divoza are huge in the NL)

I've just had one arrive to test against our own sweet itch rug, its interesting to compare and we are thinking of stocking from Divoza.

No belly protection - so not a rug for anyone with a serious problem. Great for those wanting to rug their horses up I suppose!!

Only my sweet itch boy wears a fly rug.

I will post a thread as soon as we are done reviewing the pagony rug and explain how it works (we take more photos than any other retailer)

does Bud also scratch the top of his tail or not? Only asking as Pidge gets a bit itchy occassionally during the summer so I usually pinch some of sis killitch that she uses on Sunny and it allieviates it very well. Sis uses this every day or so on Sunny and IOurO it works very well. She also just has a normal fly rug for Sunny, mark todd from memory and Sunny wears it as soon as the midges come out. She also feeds him naf d-itch but not sure whether this does any good or not, oh and he has garlic in his feed all year round.

I stand to be corrected, but as I understand it, feeding garlic in summer exacerbates sweet itch, as it stimulates the immune system and sweet itch is an over-reaction of the immune system to midge bites. I am informed that marmite sandwiches are better!

There is still debate over Garlic

On the one hand it repels flies, but on the other it should stimulate the immune system. As sweet itch is an overactive immune response, it is logical (but not proven) that garlic is not ideal for horses with sweet itch.

The marmite is B vitamins (cheaper in brewers yeast) which produces a smell that repels the midges. Yes it does work!
