Anybody got any recommendations for sweet itch rugs? I normally use a Rambo sweet itch rug but have seen cheaper alternatives on the internet. Anyone had any experiences, good or bad, with the cheaper rugs?

Boett all the way for genuine sweet-itch. The others I used trying to save money were pants (my girl went through at least one rug a season usually helped by the stoopid TB ripping it off her!) Unfortunately she died in April so I have a few rugs that I will be sticking on Ebay shortly but as she was a Friesian they are rather large!

Ditto the Rambo: you can spend a lot of money on so-called "cheaper" alternatives - and think you're doing a great thing, but they just don't last. Especially don't be tempted by the thin-mesh ones which my boy in the past has trashed within a day!! :(

I've never tried the Boett, but did try the Pagony which was supposed to be a cheaper alternative - the one I had was rubbish quality TBH, plus have to be put on over the head which isn't always appreciated by horsie!!!

Premier Equine do some nice sweet-itch hoodies: good quality and last as well.

I just bought a new rug for my sweet itch sufferer who is more of a itchy scratcher than true sweet itch I think and after lots of research I ended up witht the Rambo one. It is a lot of money but it feels good quality, fits well and seems very durable and has excellent coverage. He never manages to keep his ears in the holes for long but it does stay up the neck still. I do have a Boett which I use as alternative but it's a bit big and has a few rips but I wouldn't hesitate getting another Boett as I like the eleasticated stretchy material and fit and my boy has no qualms about it going over his head. I wouldn't waste money on any of the cheaper versions now.

You can get the boetts from the sweet itch centre online.

I have recently ditched my Brett which was in tatters and replaced it with a Rambo sweet itch hoody which my horse much prefers.

I am a snuggy hood fan and they have some bargains on their site at the moment and also some on ebay.Paid 60 for body And 45 for hood and I love them no itching at all today

I'm very much in the sweet itch hoody camp, even for those that don't have sweet itch. This year I saw a Shires version that looked very similar at half the price. Generally speaking I really like Shires rugs, but when it came it was a material that seemed much less breathable than the Sweet Itch Hoody, more like usual fly rug materal but closer threaded, and so I ended up buying another SIH as the horse it was for is very sweaty.

My highland has bad sweetitch and ripped a boett up over night and was beyond repair so won't buy another at those prices, since iv had the Rambo hoody he's not so bad and it doesn't rip, is a lot thicker. I wouldn't bother with cheaper ones

I have the hy version of the rambo hoodie for my boy with sweet itch. He won't stand for his ears being covered so a boett is out of the question. I must admit they don't stand up too well to bites from other horses in the field, but he can scratch himself in it, and its been fine with a good deal of mutual grooming on it. In fact, have just bought another for my youngster who was being eaten alive by the flies. He has previously broken 3 rugs in as many days, but so far so good for this one!
