Sweet Itch, who has really itchyhorses now??

My younger gelding usually rubs his face neck and tail, due to the midges. I have been feeding him brewers yeast for a while now and he seems to be ok atm. I can't remember when he started itching last year and wondered if anyone elses horses are itching?
He is in sweet itch rambo hoody during the day and normal fly rug as night.

I have a severe sweetitch horse even tho i have tried brewers yeast i found it not to work that time
,but i started it really early this year and touch would still has a complete mane and tail , belly hair and face hair .
she has a sweetitch rug on and a light weight summer sheet for nights to put over the top .
she was slightly itchy from her dead coat but , after a good groom and a bed bath it seems to have resolved it .

my mare has SI.the 1st year and a half i spent load £`s on lotions which didn`t help much.she rubbed so hard on a block wall that it got pushed over!
now she is covered up and has a spray of deosect when we ride and doesn`t itch at all.

covering up is the only thing that works for us.i will clip her out soon to compensate for having to wear a hood.

Nope, my pony isnt scratching yet either. He has a Premier Equine sweet itch rug on and has a daily fix of marmite in his dinner.

Hello,

For some horse's rugs lotions and supplements just dont work and they didnt for a few horses i have owned. So i spoke to the vet and there was this new calvaless treatment. A soultion that goes in the feed and a cream to put on the infected areas. We used this for a whole year and no improvement. Which was costly and very heatbreaking. So now we have the horses who are effected with sweet ich with a jab called dectomax. This is normally used in cattle and sheep which treat lice and mites. This has been the best thing ever and we did start the first injection in feb and they are due a follow up jab soon. I have done this now for the past two years and its been great. I still use a fly rug, fly mask and some fly creams but it more managable and the horse have manes and tails again! They now dont look like moth eatten rag dolls.

My incredibly itchy mare doesn't seem to have started yet. I haven't really changed anything other than she is now on Top-spec feeds. I wonder the lack of itchiness may be due to the extremely cold weather killing off the midgies/larve/whatever(!)?

the trouble is that once they start itching,they have already been bitten.
you really need to prevent the biting in the 1st place before it happens.
