Sweet itch?

Hey just wondered if any one could help me?
My pony is still suffering from sweet itch and it is driving her balistic.

i don't know what to do?

i hibi scrubbed her mane and tail today and it seemed better but she will still itch tomorrow.
any advice would be MUCH appreciated.

Turn her out in a fly rug, and coat her in fly spray. You could feed garlic to keep the flies away. Some people also feed Marmite, here is a post about it: Click Here
There are loads of different lotions and creams on the market too.

Try making sure there is no sugar or molasses in her feed, if necessary cut out hard feed for a week. It was an interesting biporoduct of trying to solve behavioural issues in our mare years ago that we found it stopped her sweet itch as well.

YO's pony itches all year round - she just has to rug him up to the eyeballs in the winter as it's too cold to wash him

The vet thinks its become more of a psychological thing rather then phsiological now.

some sweet itch horses react badly to garlic put a spoonfull of marmite in food,daily apps of benzole benzate get from small cemmists or order from boots. rug it from head to tail n bring it in when midges are about hope this helps

Hi Sunshine, my girl suffers badly with sweetitch too. There is asolutely no way i can bring her anywhere near her stable or tie her up near one, as she rubs herself until she bleeds. I just keep her out with boett on, (i totally recommend one of these). It shouldn't be too much longer. Mine usually starts coming in at night from the middle of Nov and it has usually stopped by then.
I totally understand how you feel, it is very frustrating.

one of our rescues suffers from horrific sweetitch and I treat it with Tea Tree Oil and neem oil, it works a treat. You can get neem oil from Ebay, it's a shop called pure neem. Good luck

The shetland we have with sweetitch is still in his all over fly rug and hood and still getting the occasional bite around his eyes (apart from sheath, legs and a bit of tummy this is the only bit exposed. I would be careful of feeding garlic - it is a fly repelent but also boosts the immune system and sweetitch is an over active immune system so you can end up making it much worse. Ours just gets a general purpose vitamin and mineral supplement and cider vinegar at the momment as extras to keep his skin in as good condition as possible.

My Highland still has a bit of sweet itch but it is still quite mild and evening there are lots of flying horrors.

This year has been his best yet but I have learned and here is what works for him.

Fly sheet, Field sheleter when out, don't like NAFF BUT their sweet iitch cream (not lotion) have helped. also I use DEET repellent (recommended by my Scottish Vet and available from him for a fraction of the price of commercial branded stuff).

Warning I cannot use DEET on my arabian as she has a fine coat and it burns.
