I read in a horsey mag recently of a remedy with huge success for sweet itch but cant find the article has anyone seen it and even better has anyone tried it yet ?
You'd have to be a bit more specific.
There aren't really any remedies with huge success that I know of, only the following;
1. Rug to prevent the midgy biting.
2. Put fly repellent/DEET/Avon Skin So Soft on to stop the bites.
3. Feed a supplement (like Skratch or Cavalesse sp?)
4. Put your horse on the 'vaccine' trial (a reagent, really).
dont know of any miricle cure, but certainly can recommend a boett rug, have tried the snuggy hoods version which just didnt work as well, tended to rub the mane rather than protect, but very happy with boett, make sure you put it on early and leave it there, take off only when stabled. they wash easily and quickly and can even be put back on when wet. you can use fly repellant under and over if needed, I have two with sweet itch, one mini shetland and one spanish mare, both have realy beautiful manes and tails under their rugs and seem much happier wearing them. I tend to only use fly spray where the rugs dont cover ie under their belly and between back legs, hope you find something to help.
This year we've been using Coopers Spot-On on our mare with sweet itch. You just pour it on the back once a month and that is it. we haven't used any fly spray or anything else with her and she has had no sweet itch at all. I even had to pull her mane last week as it was getting too thick! I have never dreamt of doing that in teh 6 years we have had her.
You can get Coopers at any agricultural store (or your vet), it is designed as a cattle de-louser and one bottle will cost about £40 but will probably last a year or two. Only downside is that your horse will have a greasy mark where you pour it on for a few days, but I'm happy to put up with that and not have to bother with rugging or fly spraying and have an itch free horse!
