Hi all, just wondering on your thoughts about good products for sweet itch? I know every pony/horse is different. But anyone that has had a severe case and treated it I'd like to hear from you! I have a 3 year old and she was terrible last year but I got her a sweet itch rug but it was too late then. She seems to be doing better this year but again, it's only the start of the fly season... I have had her rug on from the start but she still has a few scratches and sore skin. Was wondering if anyone could recommend creams/ointments to try! I tried herbal feeds last year and I don't they had much effect on her... I have been putting sudocrem on but would like something to heal as well as soothe...

Thank-you :)
Naomi

This year I've tried Cavalesse, but you have to start 3 weeks before season starts, as my mare is a very bad case, you will find they get worse as years go on, and so far she's a happy bunny. If you have a stable stable her from 4pm-10am. I also use a boett rug and face mask(although the mask can be a little tight round face). I was never able to use anything with Benzale Bensoloyt as she could smell it miles off and with her tbh and very thinned skinned, it burnt her. But there are some good ointment, also ask your vets advice.:):)

I've found the best way is to create a barrier between the skin and the midges. This obviously depends on the severeness of the sweet itch on how you deal with it. I find rugs move and rip too easily so I find oily products are best such as the Gold Label Itchgone Spray. Its a horrible smelly liquid you spray on and it makes the fur all oily, not very nice but it does the job.

OMG you could quite easily spend a fortune if you were able to. I have had my sweetitch sufferer for 2 years nearly and this is my second summer, and i shall tell you i am scared really scared :eek:
i have paddy on powders and sprays and rugs and from the look of his mane its helping but not fixing  i don't think you can treat 100% am i being negative??

so this is what i have paddy on (deep breath :p) d itch powder brewers yeast i also have another powder that i have not started yet
then there is benzo and all the fly sprays and the rug. fingers crossed we surivive with out damaging the ozone lol :D:D

Constantly keep fly repellent and fly rug, pretty much! One of my friends swears by the Net-tex stuff? It comes in a big tub and I think it's called something like Complete Itch Stop Salve? Something like that. Yet, another friend says that putting cold, strong black tea on the affected areas works.. Either way, invest in a good fly repellent and rug! xx

My nearly 3yr old has bad sweetitch too(no mane at the bottom, a bog brush of a tail and bald, thick shoulders last year)
He's currently in a Rambo Sweet Itch rug and fly mask. I use Deosect on him every couple of weeks and a netex cream, which I plaster all over "his bits"! Fabulous to keeping the skin moisturised and has fab healing properties too.
After reading another thread on here, he is on 50ml of brewers yeast and 25ml of magnesium every day too.
So far I have not seen him sitting like a dog and scratching his tail, which he was last year. I spoke to the vet and she said that there was no point in going down the injection route - sorry do not know what it is called - its just a case of trial and error.
I also tried giving him a Camerosa bath, but due to the weather changing I am not sure what the result really was.

Where we are it's too late to start this year - but Benzyl benzoate applied as a preventative works 100% on mine (severe). Have to put it on well before fly season (mine has been having his 4 weeks already) and carry on all the way through (till Nov last year) and for mine I do every 2 days, but I know others with less severe cases who applied it every week. It's a major irritant though, so please don't apply it now to any areas which have already been rubbed. You can order it online - I tend to then dilute it down 100% to make it easier to apply and also lasts longer. Get a bottle for next year!

The sweet itch society sell an ointment called gold ointment its a brilliant barrier and works well on my lads sheath, he bites it till it bleeds :-( its been a god send, i mix it with sudocrem as well if he manages to get any sores at all and they are all cleared up within a couple of days.
They are very helpfull if you need any advice, ive also given the snuggy hood rugs a go this year and find the hood is brilliant and he cant get it off!!!!! result :-)

A field well away from ponds, ditches, trees - the higher and more exposed the better.
Electric Fencing
Boett Rug or similar
Brewers Yeast
Apple Cider Vinegar (soothing on skin)
Linseed - good for skin condition again
Unmolassed feeds (I feed alfalfa & beet)
Nettex Itch stop salve
Trying to keep them away from the midges at their worst times, dawn and dusk. My mare is stabled overnight all year round.
