hi, have a small shetland pony companion who is suffering with sweet itch, what does anyone use, and to what degree do the products work? thanks.:)

I use a bucas buzz off rug with hood which is great but she had been wearing it since march before she started itching. Now your pony is itching I would be inclined to use good fly products and stable from late afternoon til the morning and maybe get some steroids from the vet. Once the pony has stopped itching I would then invest in a very good quality sweetitch rug. If you rug before you have the itch under control the rug will just get trashed. Although it might be worth getting a cheap rug until the itching stops

hi mandy, i too have a shettie with sweet itch :( really hard to manage as they also have such thick coats! maisey usually wears a boett rug, they do them really small and they fit! bit expensive but to be honest when you add up 10 bottles of fly spray (which does no good anyway) it pays for the rug, maiseys is 5 years old this year and although very tatty still does the job.

ditto what previous post said, get the itching under controll, but really would stay clear of steroids with shetties, they get laminitus !! i just bath maisey with a good shampoo to get rid of any other reason to itch and then stable her overnight and till about mid morning, i have a pool on my field so have quite a few midges, but stabling helps. if you can get a rug (i also have a rambo sweet itch hoody for my bigger horse who itches) then keep it on and then you dont need to stable so much.

i have agreed to trial a supplement for hilton herbs and seems to be going ok, but time will tell, not sure if / when it will come to market but will hopefully carry it on if possible.

try the sweet itch website, its /and they are really helpfull and they sell quite a few bits and pieces to help, found them very helpfull when trying to find a rug in the first place.

I use a 1/3 solution of benzyl benzoate daily on any itchy horse that I get, and it has never failed to keep the midges at bay. I've never needed to rug.

What do you mix the benzyl benzoate with? And do you put it all over or just on mane and tail?
My mare started to get sweet itch last year. I have bought her a rambo sweet itch hoody and have put neat benzyl benzoate on her mane and tail. I use Netex Itch Stop cream around her udders and the inside of her back legs.

Water. Then apply daily to any area they itch. Neat BB is greasy and recommended every three days. I find it easier to remember to do it every day and the 1/3 solution much nicer to use. It can bung up spray nozzles, so I just make a little hole in the lid of a plastic bottlel and sprinkle it on and rub it into the hair.

cptrayes - thank you for your help. Just bought 2 litres of benzyl benzoate on line and will dilute it from now on. It is helping a lot with the itching this year.
