I'll ask Admin if they will sticky this .
I thought it may be useful to have a sweet itch post with tips and tried and tested remedies and potions...seeing as there seem to be so many horses effected by this..
What works in my experience:
Get a Boett rug or similar..
Choose a field (if possible) that is exposed ie little or no trees..
Somewhere high up is ideal as midges are poor fliers so a windy location is good.
If possible install a fan in your stable for the above reason.
Keep your horse as far away from the muckheap and or any water source such as a stream/river and from woodland.
Use electric fencing where possible so they are unable to rub. They can still get a good scratch from field buddies or by rolling/rubbing on the ground but without damaging themselves so much.
Net Tex Sweet Itch Salve works well on my gelding although it is messy.
If your horse is particularly bad, ride in your sweet itch rug if its suitable (without the belly flap). Just a few bites can set off the reaction again.
Anyone got any more tips???
Marmite/brewers yeast fans?...
