hi i have a sweet itch pony, he has had it for the past five years and for the last two years i have had it fully under control! firstly if your pony is already really itchy/damaging himself i really suggest you put him in a electric fenced paddock with nothing but grass this breaks the cycle of being bitten then scratching then bitten some more! as when they itch they bring blood to the surface which attracts more midges! i did this and at the same time used net tex sweet itch salve cream on the areas he was itching and all the usual itchy areas, this is the best stuff i have found and i have trialled them all! use the cream daily untill the itching stops then i used it every other day but it depends on your horse. the best rug i have found is made by riff raff which is cheaper and last longer than a boett rug as the material is stronger! net tex fly spray is the best, which i used when i rode him and if you do this now and each year preferably start before end of march your horse should get better each year and not as sensitive, example my pony now runs with the herd and only requires the riff raff rug! personaly i think this is a better way as your horse gets to stay out as if you bring him in he has lots of ideal ways of itching himself and time to do it! which just makes matters worse! hopes this helps i know what you are going through, be firm and stick with it, it isnt easy but is worth it, good luck ps if you want any more help email me on nikki_3horses@hotmail.co.uk

totally agree with everything you've written. I've had my severe sweet itch cob for 9 yrs now. I cannot stable him as he'll bring the stable down with his itching. He'll itch even if he's not itchy...the only thing that has helped him in the past is electric fencing and the Boett and the net Tex cream. He can still scratch on the ground and knows just where to groom his pal to get the best scratch back. However, since moving near the sea and to a field high up the valley he now lives out without a rug and a minimal amount of sweet itch salve.
