can any one advise me on this... please... my yearling has just got sweetich, poor girl she has a small spot on top of tail and 4 patches on her mane, strange thing is ive never seen her rub or scratch,at the mo ive put on alo vera, and zinc and caster oil on 2 patches and they are gettin no worse, however, does this mean she will get it every summer now, or being just 14 mths old will she grow out of it, im devaststed as shes my first homebread and niether parents have it, or dont that matter...sorry so long xxxx

Ditto above - are you sure its sweet itch?

Affected horses generally love being scratched and take any opportunity to rub up against things!

If it is sweet itch, they probably won't grow out of it and you will be into the routinue of rugging up to the eyeballs to protect from the midges.

god, u got me thinking now , is lice better than sweetich then , how can u tell the diff, this is just bald patches no sores or cracks i think i better ring vet , but i no he will say i come out and check ..

Well buy some lice powder and dust on, even if not that, its cheaper than the vet

The otherpossibility might be ring worm, epsecially if the patches are quite round

lets hope for your sake its not ringworm. mine contracted sweet itch recently, my first pony of my own and was heartbroken but if you act fast enough, its deterrable.

If it is sweetitch, try putting on diluted benzyl benzoate on it. My old eventer used to have sweet itch really bad, I cleared it up with camrosa and then kept it at bay with the above solution. Make it up in a water spray bottle with about an inch deep of B/B then dilute with water. It really worked for us.
