Sweetich The Beginning

Hey crazy you ok?
tell me is it your black beastie or one of your other ones that suffer??

i hate sweet itch also hoping not to go down the road of last year poor paddy :(
have they changed the ingrediants to skin so soft?? i have brought it before but think i got the wrong one  i am at the moment putting baby oil and vinegar mix on? was thinking of adding a drop of dettol what do you think?

Hey Ibot - Am ok, ta hun. Couldn't get into account for ages so not been around till recently.

Its one of my Dartmoors who gets SI. Mainly top line, "luckily" I have had a lot of success with Neem - both Oil and cut herb. Mags used to get in the most horrendous state to the point someone suggested hogging him. But we have managed to get round it.

BTW - the detox people are called Trinity Consultants. They do a "Capers" tonic. I have been using it on my Milo cat who has a thyroid issue :( It cleanses and tones the liver and kidneys.

I would be wary of baby oil - Mags ended up burning one year when I did a similar thing.

Products / mixes containing Neem, Tea Tree, Lavender, peppermint, cedarwood, geranium, eucalyptus (tho some mozzies appear to have a liking for it apparently :-/ ) all work well. Herbs wise -in salve form, Marigold (calendula), clivers, liquorice - all have a soothing effect on the skin. I would stay away from heavy pore clogging creams as well.

You might want to have a look at a company called "Botanica" - they are Irish but are starting to have distributers over here, I think. I bought a "stop itch product from them last year. I'll trial it on him this year and see how we go. :)

Probably a stupid question but someone told me today that thoroughbreds dont get sweetitch....anyone know if its true? Ive never heard this before :o

Yes this is supposed to be the case, and I have never seen it in TBs, but I'm sure someone will have a TB SI story! We're lucky this year as it has been so dry. I have only seen midges this week. Last year it started in March, but now at least I have found some fellow sufferers to help me...

yep we can all help each other maybe stop us from crying :D

The only positive thing about losing my beautiful Friesian last year is I don't have that dreadful sinking feeling of the SI season being upon us.

Good luck to you all - I feel your pain (but more so for the horses :()

As to person who asked whether TBs get SI - I've never known one to have it.
