This is my first summer with my mare who has sweetitch, she has been ok so far. She lives out in a Rambo sweetitch hoody and she gets brewers yeast and magnesium in her feed. I have also started giving her apple cider vinegar. Could someone please tell about this linseed stuff that seems to work for others?

Rose, I went to Lincoln's site but couldn't find anything for sweet-itch and your link was to Carr Day + Martin? Can you tell us what the cream is if it works? Thanks.

My boy has been very itchy and I am panicking that he will be a sweet itch sufferer...he is 3 and I have only owned him 5 weeks.

I think I am winning the battle over most of his body but I do have problems with he very dense feathers.

He has been getting bitten on the legs and is chewing his feathers off. He has a couple of sores in his feathers from chewing. He has them washed once a week to stop them going too greasy and fly repellent but I am seriously considering zipping them off.

Anyone dealt with sweet itch symptoms in heavy feathering? Please help!

Pig oil and sulphur rubbed in liberally ours never get itchy legs.

My vet gave us a lotion called switch, that he said is better than other midge repellents. You only put a tiny bit on once a week. Has anyone tried it?

Motor has suffered badly from Sweetitch during the 19 years I have had him and I had always used Benzyl Benzoate, however this did make him a bit sore and the skin would flake off, which was most probably due to the mix being too strong.

So for the last 3 years I have tried a Rambo Hoodie, which he has lived in all day and night during the Summer and has lived out and this has worked very well.

However, last Summer, he suffered terribly with his ears, sheath and legs, being so sore and weeping. The ears and sheath are due to the gnats which irritate and cause Sweetitch, but the legs were diagnosed as Leg Mange and the Vet prescribed 'Switch' at the end of last Summer.

It was applied down the mane and over the rump, at a 10ml dosage for each part and also some on his legs. This improved the problem immediately, but my Vet suggested I get a full ear fly mast for him, which I did not really want to do, as I take his mask off at night anyway.

This year, I started off using the Switch and have applied it every week, without fail and apart from his Sheath, this has been 100% successful and I would highly recommend it.

I have managed to resolve the issue, where he is bitten all over his Sheath (which is a very big one ) by smothering it with an Aloe Vera Gel, if it flares up and once I have applied the Gel, the next day it is fine, which is a miracle to be honest.

Also he came out of last Winter with these horrid hard scabby, scaley patches, on his Elbows and Chin and they gradually flaked off and went back to normal skin .... again I think this was the Switch.

I would recommend anyone give the Switch a go............

Mine's OK'ish; having moved yards its dificult to say really how we're doing. His last place had a big artificial lake and lots of trees/common land nearby, so was a lot worse there; he's now moved back to my place which seems to be a lot better for him. We're quite high up & breezy, so I think he's been a bit better on the whole.

We're on the BioEos trial capsules. He's been having one a week up till now, and I'm thinking of reducing it to fortnightly. Has it helped? hmmmm, difficult to say, especially as he's recently moved location, plus he's still on linseed and brewers yeast, so yes, possibly, but can't be sure yet, it might need another year to be sure either way.

He's out in a Pessoa Sweet Itch hoody (brill if you can get one); plus fly mask. If I leave off the fly mask he gets all itchy round his face & ears, so if he's out, he has to wear it. Also he wears ear-covering/hoody thing if he's in the stable and the midges are particularly bad. Its like a fly-fringe with the ears attached, if you see what I mean, and not as restrictive as a mask.

He's out for most of the day; coz I work from home I can bring him in if necessary, and if the sun's really hot I'll bring him in for say a couple of hours from 11 - 3'ish if I notice its very scaldy sun, and/or he's not happy. He'd really rather be in when its hot anyway, and as he's a piebald with lots of bright white bits, he does get sunburned if he's out in the sun.

I also bring him in at night to cover the "dawn to dusk" period. So far so good, to look at him you wouldn't know he's got sweet itch. Mane is hogged and there's just a tiny bit of rubbed hair on his face & ears.

when do you think we can breathe a sigh of relief that midge season has gone??

With my two "itchies" I usually find its the beginning of November tbh although occasionally if it turns unseasonably mild the hoodies go back on again.

If we have nice blowy days in October I sometimes take them off too.

Can a horse have mild sweetitch? My mare is very itchy but does not rub raw patches. When I bring her in she rubs a lot in her stable, mane, tail and behind her ears. Have been using Benzyl Benzoate on her.
For those of you that feed brewers yeast, how much should I feed and how often?

this is my 1st SI year - new horse came in a rambo SI hoodie and I in all innocence just thought it was a good quality fly rug! fast learning curve.

after much research our routine is
Rambo hoodie + fly mask with ears
beezlebug oil on ear tips and mid line, including udders
if rough patches, caledula cream, or home made salve with aloe vera + essential oils
out 24/7 as rubs head if in the stable.

she looks fab exept for occasional rubs on ears and face.

I am waiting for a snuggy hoods suit to arrive, which has a hood including face mask which I hope will be tougher than the fly mask she keeps desptroyong/getting off. my only worry is that there is just a fly fringe over the eyes not mesh, and she has awful reactions to flys with swollen eyes, so if necessary there will be a mask OVER the hood!

feed wise, I give 2 dosing scoops of brewers yeast and 2 cups of charnwood mills linseed in with her feed/feed balancer.

I so look forward to taking her rug off when it gets windy, poor girls was sweating on the really hot days we had, despite being from Spain!

Nich, I get through lots of hoods, lol. One of my cobs is wearing a boett hood with mesh eye covers, it works ok with the hoodie althought I don't bother putting the hoodie earholes on.

My other chap has a new hood bought from ebay, it has a mesh eye area and nice strong ear covers, it zips on from underneath and again works well with the hoodie. When it first arrived I thought it would be too warm but its fine.

Katherine, we had an elderly retired pony living here with us, he had mild SI and was easily managed without a rug. He liked having a good scratch when he was stabled at night but didn't damage his skin.

Ibot, I have never found anything that aided mane/ tail regrowth, sorry. We seem to have every lotion and potion known to man too. Tbh I think ordinary baby oil rubbed into the base of the mane is as effective as anything else.

On the fly rather than midge front I have been sponging my boys over with very diluted dettol every morning and it really seems to help deter the pesky flies. It was a good tip picked up from this forum. I finish them off by dipping the ends of their tales in the solution too. Cheap and cheerful remedy !.

My boy is having his best year yet. Still only on second tub of Itch Stop Salve - this time last year we were on around tub 10! Is this due to the dry hot summer or the fact that I have put him on Brewers Yeast? Wish I knew! Anyone else tried Marmite or Brewers yeast and seen a difference?

must admit I think its the dry weather. even though I am an SI virgin, I have nticed the dramatic reduction in all flies/midges affecting all the horses not just the SI one. i think the yeast/linseed/salves etc. probably help in combination, but none of them would stop SI

Ibot, I am near Droitwich, I do know Powick.

My boys are serious rug trashers. I couldn't manage without leccie fence. My worst experience was putting my section D in a brand new Boett. Within 2 hours it was badly torn. His field mate had pawed him with his hoof while he was lying down having a snooze and caught his shoe in the tape running along the back. Rug was completely split. I only knew how it happened as the other cob had an incriminating piece of tape trapped in his shoe. Little tinkers, lol.

Its funny isn't it, I thought the flies were really bad at the moment, perhaps its just here. The midges seem pretty plentiful too. They bite me when I am putting the hens to bed.

hey nettle123 have you been to horse attack yet?? its so cool so large its my fav place to go

paddy had teeth done today by the vet (won't be doing that again lol) and was asking about the sweetitch and he said i seem to be doing ok at the moe. he did say there is some stuff they can put into the benzo if i want but that is only if the wounds are red and sore. i was like oh no he is grand no red sores.

typically i then rode in the rain and sore some really red sores in his mane  have put neem oil on it so fingers crossed that helps also smeared him in benzo

Horseatack, definately a place to avoid unless you want to spend. Did get some bargain mountain horse boots there last year though. It was great for bling pony Christmas shopping for my Niece, lovely sparkly headcollar

I tend to use sudocreme on any sore bits as it contains benzo, works well on my boys sheaths. Horrible stuff to get off your hands though !.

Is he wearing a rug at the moment ?. Its the only way i can manage my boys tbh. The sudocreme will help the sore bits. I wouldn't worry about washing with the dilure hibiscrub, the rugging and sudocreme should sort out the sore patches. I am no expert but have coped with SI for 15 years.

Do you have electric fencing ?, my boys used to trash our post and rail fences, my poor husband was on permanent fence repair duty !

Keeping your boy well wrapped will probably be the best way forward.
