I have a random question about sweetitch rugs
Not the ones like the Boett but the ones like overgrown fly rugs, that hook over the horse's ears.

So my question is, do they stay in place when the horse grazes?
I've always felt they'd slip back when the neck was stretched?
Or do they need a headcollar to hold them in place?

I recently bought a Premier Equine Sweetitch hoody and I’m very pleased with it. there is a Velcro tab under the jaw to keep the hood in place. Occasionally, if he is not wearing a mask, Seamus will get the hood off or one of his ears will disappear so I have to fish it out through the hole again but all in all it is a big success. If I put a mask over the top it stays in place perfectly. It is cut in such a way there is plenty of allowance for grazing.

Used to have to put a headcollar or flymask on mine if I wanted his ears to stay through the ear holes of his Rambo. Stopped putting him in the Rambo when he kept coming in as a total sweatball in summer and switched to Snuggies which let his skin breathe better. Unfortunately they don't stand up to rug rippers in the herd and it's cost me a small fortune this year.

Depends on rug and pony/horse. I have had two. One stayed in place, but the other always fell back off the ears. Didn't seem to bother my mare, though. Both had the velcro jaw straps.

Mine doesn’t stay in place no, however in proper fly weather I use a fly mask with ears and that keeps it all on correctly!
Can highly recommend the Shires Highlander. I recently upgraded mine to a Rambo SI hoody which has since been ebayed and the money gone to a second Shires.

In my experience they stay put on some but anything with a lot of mane you need a head collar over them.mine would slip forward so he looked through the earholes without a headcollar or being strapped to a mask or hood.

Whether they stay put depends on the fit. Some better than others. Doesn't seem to bother my boy one jot whether his ears are in, out or one of each.
I wouldn't use a headcollar - have seen nasty injuries from headcollars in the field. Rugs at least seem to rip clean off when there's a problem.

I love the Rambo hoody EXCEPT the hoody part - it never stays over Henry's ears and usually ends up over his eyes, so I always flapped the hoody back. Last year I thought I would try the Shires sweet itch rug - the hoody part is Lycra so it stays in place much better, although I still flap it back so it goes no further that behind the base of his ears. He's hogged (someone earlier mentioned about some horses having a lot of mane).

Other horses on my yard wear the Rambo with the ears through the holes and they always seem to stay in place, so I don't know what makes them stay in place on some but not others. I did try and keep the Rambo hoody in place with a field-safe headcollar but it still flapped about.

I have premier equine, shire and rambo SI rugs. The first two stay over his ears but the neck on the rambo doesn't seem long enough and pony's ears are always out of the ear holes. It's a shame as apart from that I really like it as a rug and it's good when the weather gets hot
