just had the vet about another matter and we got talking about sweetitch. The advice given to me was that in addition to using a sI rug to feed a balalnced omega 3 and 6 oil eg linseed oil or evening primrose and a feed balancer or suitable minerals and protein to correct any defficiency in a short hard feed, [ get forge tested.]
Also to spray/sponge with Deosect insect repellant on any exposed belly etc and feed Piriton [about 8 tablets for a 500 to 600 kg horse.

Thankyou, Hf1, very timely as i've just aquired a SI pony. The SI has been neglected as the owner didn't realise it was SI! Will start the linseed today.

Be careful with the Deosect. Both of mine had awful reactions to it. Do a patch test first.

There's lots on here about SI; do a search and it will all come up!

Mine has Brewers yeast, 1 scoop per feed, Clivers (fresh when in season), Micronised Linseed & a splash of cider vinegar. He's fed 2X daily during the sweet itch season.

Also I tend to stable him when midges around, to include the dawn to dusk period if possible.
