Swelling above fetlock

My horse over the last couple of weeks has had some heat in his near hind on the inside, was sound on the foot, farrier had a good look and couldn't find anything to worry about so I have carried on as usual. He is only in light work as only back into work since Christmas.

Over the last 48 hours he has developed a small swelling either side of the leg just above the fetlock on this leg between the cannon bone and tendons, they are soft and squishy, and not sensitive but he does seem reluctant with that foot when picking it out.

I have left a message for the vet this morning and await his call with thoughts, just worrying so wondered if anyone else had experience of this?

Sounds like windgalls, but do get checked out if there is reluctance to pick up the leg.

Is the horse lame?

My mare has synovitis of the distal tendon sheath nr hind, the windgalls go up and down, and there is reluctance to have the leg picked up, and she is on/off lame. Initially though there was no lameness just the grr don't pick my foot out.

Same happened with my mare, put it to windgalls but she wasn't moving right ans was lame in both hind legs! Turns out she has serious cartilage damage. It does sound very much like windgalls, but would get a vet to check it out to be on the safe side.

Thanks for your responses. What would I do without the H&H forum!

I spoke with the vet yesterday and she said to trot up and flexion test the joint and if not lame just to keep an eye on them.

I did this last night and he is sound. So I rode him as usual and this morning no difference to the swelling although I am wrapping the legs overnight.

My challenge is the horse is only three months back into work after having most of last year off, so the work is light but I am concerned that there is obviously something going on and I am barely putting any pressure on him.

Should I just carry on gradually building up the work/give him a week off/just hack for a couple of weeks?

I have had so many challenges with this horse - bless him!
