Hi there, i've noticed recently my yearly keeps developing a swelling right behind his chin and can be quite hard sometimes, he does also have swollen glands alot of the time so is this connected?? They are out 24/7 but grass isnt that great....

Have spoken to the vet who didnt seem overly concerned unless it was still around for a while, just wondered whether anyone had any experience of this??

Thanks all...

Sounds like "grass glands".
These are a swelling of the parotid salivary glands and may be brought on by an allergic type reaction, although I don't think anyone is completely sure.
Grass glands are seen in horses out to grass, with no other obvious changes in routine. The swelling will go away in a day or two usually.
I saw it in my youngster when he was a 3 year old but haven't seen it this year

I get 'grass glands' on my horse, and this does sound like the same thing. She gets her glands up on her neck and face sometimes, and also around her boobs!

A good way to tell is if you stable the horse for 2 or 3 days and stop access to grass, then they should just go down. Even if the grass doesn't appear to be that good, at this time of year, even the shortest pasture can be quite lush in terms of sugars and other nutrients.

However, definitely worth getting the vet to look as there could also be an absess of the tooth - as your vet doesn't seem bothered, then I wouldn't panic too much either :)
