So I had a message on Thursday evening to say that my mare had come in from the field with puffy eyes, which improved when she had been ridden. When I checked in the evening, there was only residual swelling.

Over the next couple of days her eyes went up and down a couple of times, but nothing dramatic, and I initially put it down to a reaction to flies.

On Saturday I noticed Tartine had some swelling around her teats, so I lunged instead of riding - she is showing no discomfort. Yesterday the swelling seemed to be creeping along her midline to her belly button. It remains soft and non-tender.

The only possible thing I could think of is she was vaccinated last Tuesday with a new brand that she hasn't had in the past, but after a week I would expect any vaccination reaction to have subsided.

I'll call the vet if it hasn't decreased by tomorrow, but in the mean time - any ideas???

Sorry no real ideas, but my Father's mare gets something similar (like in the photos) when it's very hot, it always goes down once it's cooler though.

The files couldn't of bitten her could they, and she's had a reaction? I would be on alert in case it was the vaccination though, as they can cause issues with some animals (and humans alike). If the swelling is still there tomorrow, I'd call your vet, just to be on the safe side.

Hope the swelling goes soon, I'm sure it's nothing to worry about. :)

Mine gets this-its from midge bites- very itchy - makes her rub her tails too- good squirt of fly spray, diluted dettol or avon skin so soft (the best action on midgey type insects) works well though!
