My horse came in with a cut a couple of weeks ago, very clean, quite superficial, nothing to worry about. but the vet was at the yard with another horse, so got her to look at it. also said nothing to really worry about, but knowing my horses history (swells up at the smallest of cuts!) she put him on antibiotics, said there was no need for bute. he has never been lame on it. it doesnt bother him, obviously no pain in it. the swelling has pretty much all gone down, but there is a small area left, a small bump, above and to the side of the cut. its a soft lump, and as you push it, it comes back at you quite quickly. maybe a little bit of heat, but nothing really to worry about. being turned out 24 hours on vets advice a couple of weeks ago to keep it moving. cold hosing twice a day and walking hacks. the cut has stayed clean the whole time, i really dont think its infection. just wanting advice on what to do next, he has no antibiotics left, im tempted to phone vets tomorrow and book in for a scan, but im not sure if im over reacting? but better to be safe than sorry?

sorry for such a long post, but all opinions will be appreciated!! any ideas on what it could be?

sorry forgot to add where the cut is! the actual cut is half way between the knee and the top of the leg, at the front of the leg. the lump is just about the cut, towards the inside of the leg

Could be just a little bubble of trapped fluid - if you're worried then get the vet to come and have a look - booking a scan is probably a bit over the top at this moment in time - good luck

thanks, thats what i wanted to hear! vet mentioned it when she first came out, saying if its not gone down in a couple of weeks, book a scan, but they have to say that to cover their backs IMO. will phone the vets tomorrow and get someone to look at him again

My horse has something similar from a kick without a cut several years ago. He was never lame, but the swelling didnt go down. The vet saw it and wasnt worried about it and said to ignore it.

As long as the cut is not infected, leaking pus or smelly, then do not worry, keep it clean and the vet can have a look next time.

thankyou

the cut has stayed amazingly clean the whole time, its pretty much dissappeared now, as i said it was only superficial, most of it was just a graze so healed really quickly

i think i just have a wuss of a horse who swells up at anything!! (he hardly ever gets cuts, but when he does you can gurantee it will swell!)

just a quick question, when this happened to your horse how long did it take for it to go down? and what work did you do with the horse?

I'm only walking mine out on hacks currently, should i continue doing this until the swelling has completely gone, or do you think some gentle schooling would do no harm? obviouslsy i will ask the vets when they come tomorrow, but it would be nice to hear other opinions too

Unfortunately, the swelling has not gone down, I rubbed liniment on it for a few months, but no improvement.

The main thing is that Jake is not and was not in pain or lame. I think the kicked caused a bursa (fluid filled cyst). I asked the vet to aspirated it (stick a needle in and suck it out!) but they advised against it saying it will refill.

The main thing is that the cut is not infected and is healing nicely. Have a word with your vet, maybe your horse has something which can be treated. Fingers crossed.

ok thanks for that!

im not too fussed if its always visible, we dont do showing and his legs are quite bumpy anyway, so another bump would blend in with the others!!hehe. will get vet out tomorrow and see what they suggest, but thankyou all for putting my mind at rest

Hey you are welcome.

Hope all goes well for you.

Thats what I thought about my horse, another bump to add to the others and add character!
