My mare has had a slight filling in her off fore for a couple of weeks. It went down with exercise, wasn't hot and there was no lameness, and nothing apparent that triggered it.

We gave her light work for a week and then had the vet, who has diagnosed a swollen tendon sheath. She has told me that there is nothing to worry about, and recommended a scan, which we are having done on thursday.

The mare is currently on 10 mins walk work a day on soft ground but is completely sound.

Do any of you have any experience with tendon sheath issues, and also could you let me know potential prognosis please.
I appreciate that my situation could well be completely different but would appreciate any idea of the prognosis and healing time for such things.
Also whether or not there is a longterm impact on the ability of the sheath to withstand strenuous work (mare is being aimed at BE).

Thanks for reading,

We have an old retired ex racer who has one massive tendon, he has also had his legs fired in the long distant past (he is 23). Although we rarely ride him, the large tendon was no problems for the lady who had him before, and he used to do xc/sj with her. He never seems to suffer from it, and is still sound to go hacking etc.
Think tendon sheaths can be fine, as another of ours has an enlarged sheath around his knee, and he is fine too.

Would you say its a windgall or a properly swollen tendon sheath (as in a long swelling versus a bulb at the bottom?)

All mine have windgalls due to the breeding and it doesn't make any difference, if I was showing I could compress them with elastic bandages to remove the fluid, but I don't usually bother!!!

I would say it is a properly swollen tendon sheath - the swelling runs up the back of the leg but thickens into a bulb at the base.
Can I ask what breeding you're referring to, and thanks for replying
