Hi there,

I recently, within the last 4 weeks, I have exercising a 7 year old, 15.1hh cob type mare for a lady who hasnt got the time to take her out.

On monday i noticed two largeish lumps (10 cms by 5 cms) behind the girth area and symmetrical on both sides. They are fairly firm and do not cause her any discomfort i.e she lets me groom there without any issue. They seem to me almost glandular or muscular?

A bit of history: Due to her previous lack of exercise she is overweight, not obese though and fairly unfit. I have been taking her out 4-5 times a week doing 30 mins-1 hour hack walking and trotting due to her lack of fitness. I have been asking her to canter and most of the time she will canter nicely until I ask for trot, however she will buck when I ask for canter occassionally, but has becomoe better the more I ride her. She is not very experienced with schooling (in fact has barely been schooled) and believe the bucking could be due to this OR could be due to her saddle.

Her saddle is a treeless one and I dont believe is suitable for her, whether its because of her weight-gain or the fact is was bought off the shelf and not fitted for her! However, aside from the bucking problem doesnt show signs its uncomfortable and moves freely in the lower transitions and seems happy when out. I have been riding her in a thicker, sheepskin numnah though and her owner has said she will get the saddle checked and fitted.

The reason I write about the lumps and the saddle/bucking is because someone out there might see a link. A bit of research I did said they could be tension knots caused by a badly fitting saddle. However they might be totally seperate issues too!

any help / comments much appreciated on either the lump issue or the saddle bucking thing.

Many Thanks

My friends gelding came up with lumps like this behind his girth as well. He is slightly overweight at the moment as he had been out of work. They didn't seem to trouble him, didnt flinch when you touched/poked them etc, they went away after a couple of days. Would be interested if any knows why or what they were?
