Hi, just wondering if anyone has any experience of a small bursal enlargement on the check ligament. My daughters 14.2 has been lame for 2 weeks now, he has been on bute for 1 week and the puffy swelling is not showing any signs of going. I am cold hosing it twice a day and rubbing in linament as suggested by vet.
The problem I have is that her 13.2 is due to go out on loan in the next few weeks and if the 14.2 is going to be out of work for any length of time, I will have to keep 13.2 so she has something to ride.
I appreciate the check ligament question could be answered "how long is a piece of string" but just wondering if anyone has any idea of roughly the quickest he may recover. It is a small windgall like swelling on his check ligament and although he appears sound in walk, he is most obviously lame in trot. We have been advised by vet to keep him out by day in small paddock and in by night. He has been lame for two weeks today.
Thankyou in advance for any input.

Without seeing it I would be guessing but you should be considering up to 6 weeks complete rest, along with cold hosing. If he comes back into work too quickly it will either swell again or associated areas will be affected

Agree with MH
Have you had it scanned? its the best way to see how bad it really is...
Dec 07,My cob did a big hole in his but wasnt at all lame, just swollen. He had 6 months off work with regular ultrasound therapy and is back in full work (even hunted in feb/march)

One of ours had a small swelling on his after fast work one day. It was scanned 2 days later, and they were pretty certain it was fluid around the check ligament.

He was turned out in a small area (horse didnt 'do' box rest), course of Danilon, and Tensolvet used 3 x's daily.

Second scan after 3 weeks, showed complete dispersion of fluid and back to work, building up again over 3 weeks.

my pony has done her check ligament and is now on her 3rd month of box rest with upto an hour turnout in a 12 x 12 paddock once a day and walking inhand she is also at the stage i can ride her so i can start some trotting work. the first month she was on complete box rest with cold hosing 2nd month building upto the stage of where we at now.

hope this helps and hope your pony makes a full recovery!
