Swelling on cheek bone? salivary glands?

Hi all,

My horse came in last night and I noticed bilateral swellings on her cheeks. The swellings were about 3-4inches in diameter but flat (if that makes sense).

She had been out yesterday on a new field with a bit more grass and a friend suggested it might be swollen silavary glands. I thought silavary glands were towards the back of the cheek/throat area not on the outside of the cheek bone? could it be lymph instead?

would love to hear your suggestions please?

Thanks Hert05, thats the conclusion I came to. I was just wondering about them.
Leviathan; i dont think its grass mumps as there is no swelling near the throat or salivary glands, its just in the lateral aspect of the cheek bone.

thought thats what i said grass causes it we call it hamster head or grass mumps
 
My old boy had an infection to his salivary glands last year.

He swelled up under his jaw, under his tongue.

He was unable to swallow or control his saliva and made a distinctive 'slurping' noise.

I thought he was dying!

Vet said it was rare as hen's teeth to get such an infection.

Horses on our yard often get lumps to their cheeks with no consequence.
 
My old mare used to get swellings in the groove behind the cheekbones, going up to her ears which I always put down to something in the grass.
Last week my four year old came in with a swollen throat, more underneath and a bit of 'floppy' swelling on her cheek. I did some schooling and she was a complete cow so think it was a bit uncomfortable so gave up after a good bit!!. She was fine the next morning. I had put her back into another paddock the night before so it must be different grass doing it.

I've had this too across the last few weeks on random days, just assumed grass to be the cause and now the horses have changed fields they've gone. Some evenings they were bigger than others but always had gone down by the next morning after pony was stabled overnight.
