What structures are damaged in the knee? Is it just skin deep, or deeper?S

Perhaps I'm being over cautious, I'm sure your vet knows a lot better than me! I just worry about cuts over joints as they can be very serious indeed.

Well, maybe try to rinse it very gently with a little saline solution, then pop a wet animalintex poultice on it...shiny side out to draw out the pus (although if you see anything that looks/feels like joint oil, get the vet tonight).
Assuming no joint damage, pop gamgee or fybagee or similar padding over it, and do a knee bandage (avoiding the pisiform/accessory carpal bone which sticks out the back of the joint).
Don't do the bandage too tightly...
Forgot to say, it might be good to do stable bandages on both fores first.
Hope this helps

Then once you've cleaned it, leave it open as your vet asked. If the horse isn't lame I don't know that I'd give it bute - unless your vet tells you to specifically.
I'm not really sure what you are asking, tbh, - maybe if you can spell it out more, we can help more?
