Swelling on LH on youngster

My rising 3yr old escaped from the field Saturday, had a canter around but nothing crazy and was fine once in. However, he came out the stable sunday with a very swollen LH from the fetlock up, he was happy to walk on it although sensitive to touch. Was hot and hard but after a walk and cold hosing, swelling went down. I’ve kept him in and bandaged but this seems to make the swelling worse. Have been using cold water boots which have really helped take the swelling and heat down although now it looks like it’s gone lumpy? 2 days apart in pictures and he’s not as sensitive to it being touched. I’ve been racking my brains as to what it could be, has anyone experienced this before? Am I unnecessarily worrying about it being a tendon injury? Could it possibly be windgalls? I did notice at the weekend he had another growth spurt, could this be a reaction to him growing? He also had a touch of mud fever recently but this has cleared up now. Any ideas/advice would be greatly appreciated!

yes this is a vet job really, there are so many things it could be, could be an injury, could be some cellulitis, one of mine has just blown up like that in reaction to an abscess in his foot.

It could be a number of things, but given you are having to ask the question, the only responsible answer is to get the vet.

It’s likely not serious, but if it is then action needed

The shape change just looks like it is due to the pressure distribution from whatever you are wrapping around it. Since it hasn't gone down in a couple of days you need the vet really.

as you have already said swelling went down with hosing and walking keeping him in has not helped the swelling . It is not a windgall and not due to growth spurt so I would guess he may have slightly strained something when he got out or there is a tiny wound/puncture which has let infection in . So as others have said best get the vet to advise .
