I have just noticed that my horse has a swelling appeared under his jaw bone. It is about 3 or 4 cm across and is about 1 or 2 cm raised. The swelling is under the rounded part of his jaw and is between the two jaw bones but much closer to the left one. The swelling seems quite well defined (so I doubt he has just bumped himself) is fairly soft and tender to touch. It is not on the bone area but underneath in the soft bit.

I rode him this morning but didn't notice the swelling until after I had finished so I'm not sure if it is something that has come up while he was being ridden (although he went very well so I doubt it) or it appeared overnight.

He seems otherwise okay in himself but I always worry about the slightest thing.

Has anyone had this problem before and / or does anyone have any ideas as to what it might be?

I have tied his haynet up high to help drain the swelling but don't really know what else to do.

Hi. Sounds like glands to me - may have eaten something in the field or in his hay etc. Often from eating buttercups. When my guys glands' come up they usually go down by the morning. If I was you would see if it has gone down by the morning and if not, then would probably get it checked out. After all, better to be safe rather than sorry! :)
