Hi all

Came to check my horse this evening and I've noticed a slight swelling behind his chin.

I've got the vet coming Friday for his jabs but I'm wondering if he needs to be seen sooner.

He's fine in himself, eating/grazing as normal, he doesn't flinch when I touch it, no nasty smell coming from his nose/mouth or any green snot and temp is 37.2.

I did check for a small cut or bite but couldn't see anything.

Any ideas as I'm a bit worried.

Trying to attach photos but it says upload too large 🤔

There are various glands around the face and under the jaw. Some of them are to do with the lymph system. This looks a bit like these have swollen for some reason.
I think there can be a lot of causes, some are not worrying and some are.
I had it on one of mine that had complex needs so I don't actually know what was causing it in my case, but cushings was one of the issues.
I wouldn't panic, but I think it would be worth having a phone conversation with the vet before they come on friday.
Sorry - that's all I know.

It could be a fly bite? My horse had a swollen chin the other day, like you're no obvious cause and perfectly happy. Went away after a day or two. I put it down to fly bite or he'd banged himself.

I had that on a horse, vet said it was lampas and nothing to worry about although I thought lampas was on the roof of the mouth

Update - much better today. A tiny wee bump behind his chin but otherwise not noticeable. Going to keep an eye on it still but hopefully he's just had a disagreement with a pissed off wasp.

There's a thing called grass glands that is swelling of the salivary glands and can indicate a reaction to something they've eaten, and flush grass growth like we have now can set it off.
But do mention it to the vet - it can indicate other issues with the metabolism and may happen again.

Did it go down overnight due to stabling? If so, it's likely to be the grass and you'll probably find it swollen again this afternoon.

No he is currently still on 24/7 summer turnout on grass.

I will keep a close eye on it for the next few days and mention it to the vet on Friday just in case. Thanks everyone ☺️

Take the temp B4 u start to panic. Is there a yellowish snot dripping from the nose and are the eyes running?
Check to see if any of the lumps are secreting small drops of pus.
It could be grass mumps or worse. Just check as often as u can,if it turns worse B4 Friday phone ur vet.

It could be grass mumps or something worse.
