I know of one method where the young horse's leadrope is passed through the tie ring and tied onto an old heavy car tyre. So if the horse/foal tries to pull back it will have to lift the tyre off the ground, until it gets stuck at the tie ring. This method allows the horse slightly move give than tying directly to a post/wall/tree, but still won't allow them to actually break free. Have never actually seen it in practise though so don't know how effective it is or how it compares to swinging as described here.

You dont do it with baler twine as it just breaks and they get loose, you tie them strait to a tree/telegraph pole or something strong so they cant get free, and use a good strong headcollar that wont break!
With mine it took only half and hour for them to realise they couldnt break free so gave up they had the odd pull when i was going near to tame them but thats all really?

Sorry wasn't clear he was swung with a chain to a telegraph pole. He subsequently carried on pulling back and snapping baler twine to 'check' he could escape then just stand there. With teaching to lead a horse you spend time doing stuff in the field with them then they start to follow you (a year in one annoying case!) and then you put a headcollar on and they continue to follow you (grooming etc. aswell) then you attach a leadrope with no contact then they follow you then they walk beside you then they will follow you to the ends of the earth over tarp and everything. nb. never use food. And tying up because you are there they just stand because they love you!
Never had this fail but has taken a year to even get a headcollar on patience.
