So still searching for a horse and really did not think it would be the minefield it is, went to one yesterday and did not even get on it, the owner said it had never bucked like that before, and trust me it bloody well bucked. That an afternoon i will never get back, apparently it had never bucked before I saw it, it also was being a total tit to tack up - again it was always perfect before yesterday ??
Seeing 2 tomorrow, a gelding in the morning an a mare in the afternoon but i have been viewing a lot of horse videos as I cant keep having time off work, and just wondering if your put off by swishing tails when they are jumping.

It’s a red flag but it depends on the rider to an extent. If they’re heavy handed and hard on the horse I’d want to see what it’s like for myself. If they are not, it would be more of a red flag.

A lot of sellers bleat about the way they are messed about by buyers, i am feeling messed about by sellers - still fighting to get my deposit back on the failed vet one, looks like its going to be a small claims job a horse that has never bucked and started just at the moment i asked to see it ridden, dread to think if i had got on first, one that i saw was weaving and told it had never done that before, and 1 advertised as 16.2 an if it was 15 hands it was on its tip toes.
I have called about one, whom is not able to be viewed as its got asthma - not in the ad, one that when i got to see it had nothing left in the tank, but had just come out the field.

I remember when horse buying was fun and easy, but the last one I brought was in 2012 - off to look at dragon driving.

It must be really off putting and frustrating and deflating…even worse fighting to get your deposit back!
In 38 years, I bought private twice in my whole life. Other two times I have used solway racehorses because I trust him not to sell me a sack of crap.

Normal sadly, it happened to me also. I did get mine back with just the threat of legal action though. Last time I was buying, in 2021, I got a ccj against the dodgy dealer who refused to return my deposit but he went to prison shortly afterwards so couldn't recover the money.

What sort of horse are you looking for?

Yes to a swishing tail, would put me off. I've seen a couple on sales videos swishing their tails. Particuarly on short side of arena, reminds me of Bails when she had spavin (before it was treated).

This is a horse I went to view a few months ago. "It's never done that before" said the owner when it started broncing with me!

OP meant to say if it's the horse from up North that is slightly underpriced (IMHO) and whose name is spelt with an additional 'M' than is the usual spelling then it would be a no from me.

Do what I found and keep a file of horses adverts and the date you have seen them advertised plus the price they are being sold for.

I'd say as a rule of thumb the horse that doesn't sell after a couple of weeks in the current market, or has consistently had its price reduced each week would be a red flag to me.

Agree with keeping a file - but if they look a bit pricey and are still available after a while its worth calling to see how flexible they are on price

I kept a file of adverts I had phoned about, my reason for not viewing and same those I’d looked at. Recently found the file and googled names to see if they’d won much, did I miss a star! (No)

Keeping a file is a good idea. I must admit I viewed a driving pony a while ago who seemed lovely but she constantly tail swished once we set off. I don’t no why but it really put me off especially as the owner made a point of talking about her tail swishing which is completely normal for her apparently she does it all the time, but didn’t say anything in the advert about it. There was also some other stuff that wasn’t in the advert that put my off when speaking to her, My gut told me no. Trotted her up in hand, didn’t tail swish at all.

Keep everything crossed tried a lovely 4 year old this morning, being vetted tomorrow - went over some x country, for a little hack and he is a bit wiggley under saddle in the school, and a bit lookey - and obviously a bit weak as only been backed 4 weeks. Put the viewing on the mare on hold until i know the vetting outcome tomorrow.
