Hi any ideas on the above? My daughters pony has an extremely swollen off side udder, the near side udder is completely fine. She does not want it touched under any circumstances. Called the vet who thought it might be mastitis although she was not completely sure. Gave the mare some pain relief and antibos but it still has not gone down. Is it normal for a 7 year old mare, who had a foal about 3 years ago to get mastitis? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks:(

It's not 'normal' - but it happens! It certainly sounds like mastitis and I would have expected the vet to strip the udder off as much as possible (under sedation) and to use one of the special syringes of antibiotic straight into the udder. She would also need a broad spectrum antibiotic for at least a week - there are any number of pathogens which could be responsible.

Do please take mastitis very seriously as it can be really bad news in mares. My mare developed mastitis recently and we treated her with penicillin, anti-inflammatorys (danilon) and hot compresses, I also stripped her as much as I could (although you obviously need to be very careful doing this). Sadly it didn't improve (she had agressive melanomas so other issues) and she was pts. If it is not improving, please do get your vet back.

Hi thanks for the replies. The vet who attended was very keen to strip out the next day if the swelling had not gone down but was unavailable when I called to speak to her however, her colleague said to leave it well alone and just keep giving the antibos and bute and it would go down on its own accord.
