Swollen cheek bone ???

My 2 yr old came in with a swollen hard like boney cheek bone on Monday, its swollen sideways and inside aswell as longways.. The vet has come over twice once to administer antibiotics and bute and today to examine with a gag. He sedated him and managed to get the gag on but could only open his mouth about 2 notches as his jaw is so swollen and wouldnt allow it to go any further ... He had a good look at his teeth but could not find anything and has said that the swelling is to far up to be his teeth anyway, so now he is thinking a kick or some kind of trauma... He is coming back with an x ray machine later in the week but was just wondering if anyone has ever had this before ??
I know it seemed a silly question but had to ask him, but this horse has had OCD in his hock and I did ask if it could be this but he didnt seem to think so ???

Had a 3 year old with a swollen cheek. Antibiotics didn't help, turned out to be an absess in a tooth that had died in the jaw when she was 11 months. She'd been kicked and suspect it was that trauma that killed the tooth while still in the gum, and eventually, 2 years later, gave rise to an absess.

Hope your vet is able to find the cause of your boy's problem, good luck,

Im hoping to go out one morning and it will just of burst and it's an abcess and nothing more major but not as yet, he has finished his antibiotics and bute now but it still looks the same to me ...
He is taking his time to eat now so must be uncomfortable for him :( just want Monday to be here so I can have him x rayed.....
 
Hi Aztec1 - no its not going to be OCD. It does sound like a kick/foreign body/abscess. Unfortuntaly - an abscess while not seemingly a major problem can be very expensive to treat so fingers crossed it isnt one of those. As long as he is eating ok try not to worry too much until you have the x rays done.
 
Good luck with X rays on Monday and hope they find the problem.
My filly had the tooth extracted at the vet hospital and was fine afterwards. She needs 6 monthly dental checks due to having lost the tooth, but otherwise, she is fine and has no problems with eating or bitting.
 
Quick update... My vets had someone come out to take x rays last wk and he said he couldnt find anything wrong ( my vet still hasnt seen the x rays yet ) no breaks or fractures, the next morning it burst and was horrible :( so I phoned the vets again and asked them to refer him to the Equine hospital which they did... Yesterday more x rays and only to find his jaw bone has had a kick by one the others and is broken.... The abcess was caused by tiny fragments of bones being pushed out .. The vet at the practice had a good feel and removed any more bones and I now have him home on medication until it heals, she said a break is alot better than a tooth abcess and he should b ok ..
