My WBx has been roughed off for around 2 months now, to recuperate after tendon injury. He is kept rugged as and when necessary and fed daily on his Formula 4 Feet supplement and if he is lean ish then some Outshine. I check him every day and today I noticed his coronet bands were noticeably swollen on his front hooves. No heat, no lameness. Is this him growing better hoof out now? Or something else to panic about!? My thinking is that he is growing better quality bigger hooves out, as he is now barefoot. He has also been on this hoof pellet for a round 3 - 4 months.

No idea - but will keep an eye on your post - I'm just about to take shoes off a horse for the same reason and she's kept in similar cirumstances to yours - maybe this way I can avoid giving myself heart failure in a couple of months!

Is it only the front feet that are swollen?

I would keep a VERY close eye on it if I were you. In fact, with my track record I would be hosing (probably an over-reaction but seriously, I am a walking disaster/my horse is!) and if it doesn't go down in a couple of days, call your vet for advice.

I know, I have my vet's number on speed dial! I spent about 10 minutes alone on his front foot check today. Also he is an incredibly sensitive beast, grass changes cause him to look like the elephant man and on Weds his eyeball was nearly hanging out due to ONE eyelash irritating it! The weather here is warm yet wet and thats his favourite over reacting weather...

This used to happen to my old mare all the time - but never caused any problems. I mentioned it to the vet one day when he was out for something else and he said it was nothing to worry about in my case. If you're worried, give your vet a call.

I think mine said it was something to do with the amount of water on dewy grass or something random like that?!

Hello there was something about this in one of the horsey mags this month. It said it is the periople (sp?) absorbing water eg off dewy grass, and a common sight in horses out at grass, described it as a white swollen band around the coronet.
