swollen eye help

my section B seems to have a swollen and runny eye,have been putting orbenin in it but still seems swollen.

any other ideas how to bring swelling down,next option bathing it,does the cold tea option work?

she has a show on sunday
 
I would get the vet out, it sounds like conjunctivitis.. :( very painful for your horse and you if you catch it from him! (i caught it from my old horse!!//it hurts!!)
 
Please dont put anything in your horses eye without it being checked by a vet.
It could be an ulcer or infection or something in there. You dont know for sure whats wrong ( or you wouldnt be posting on here asking for advice ) and you could easily end up doing alot of damage to the eye.

Do you know how the eye got swollen in the first place? Orbenin fights bacteria but what if the horse has been kicked in the eye or banged it in it's field or stable? I'd just rather call the Vet out incase it gets worse. hope you find a solution :)
 
Borrowing Papafrita from her Agony Aunt role for a moment: yes of course you can put an antibiotic cream in your horse's damaged eye without getting the vet out to see if the cornea is damaged or the orb is ruptured. What do you need a vet for? And even if the damage isn't caused by bacteria, so what? It won't have cost anything. And cold tea is brilliant - much, much better than getting the vet out. Don't listen to those people who say cold tea, at best, will just soothe tired eyes. If you make a really strong cup and add milk and 3 sugars that should work wonders, especially if the cornea has been damaged. And hey, so what if he loses his eye/sight? He's got another eye hasn't he?

Vet. Now. You absolutely cannot mess with eyes.
 
Please please please call the vet!

A few years ago my old welsh x had a runny eye. The vet was called said it was conjuntivitus & gave me some cream for her.

Said vets soon stopped equine services so had to move, 3 weeks later runny eye starts again.

New vet came, explained about the previous runny eye so he did some tests. Turns out she had a disease (cant remember the name), had to spend 8 weeks in complete darkness, then was on permanant eye cream. Her eye, after a year, shrivelled up & died. She lived her last year completely blind in her left eye.

The insurance wouldnt pay out because i had not informed them of the 1st consultation & treatment by original vet (it had cost £30 so really never thought about insurance!)

She still competed with that 1 eye & the vet did suggest it be removed purely for cosmetic reasons - but with insurance not helping i couldnt justify paying £1000 just for her looks.

So please ring the vet - you cant ever be too careful with eyes xx

- are you a vet op? do you have any veterinay quals? if no, i agree with others :)
Frizbee looks like shes smiling! cute :)
 
She was always smiling lol!!! She was never bothered by the blindness, in fact she did gymkhana better than ever afterwards as she couldn't see the flags!!! :)
 
Ditto the advice you have already had. If I have a horse with a slightly puffy, runny eye with NO signs of other 'damage' I will use Orbenin for 2-3 days AS LONG AS IT IS SHOWING SOME IMPROVEMENT AFTER 24 HOURS!!

If there is NO improvement after 24 hours, then vet!

Yep tea defo works for mine anyway, I put a few t bags in a suitable container add boiling water, wait for it to cool and use the t bags to bath his eyes, my horses eye has got better overnight using this method. I would say if its not better in a couple of days might be worth getting the vet in case there's something wrong
 
If your orbenin eye ointment is more than 28 days old it will be useless anyway...

Amy suggest golden eye ointment, I think thats chloramphenicol?? which is now readily available from chemists , its the ointment you get prescribed for conjunctivitis for babies , adults etc.. and animals, its very good but you would need gallons for a horse, infact you need 1/2 tube or Orbenin twice a day!

The trouble is its like everyone else said, if she has scratched her eye and had given herself an ulcer it needs really specialist treatment, and a delay can cause damage that can't be repaired!

Also she could have a blocked tear duct, or what if the actual eye is swollen and she had glucoma?? What if her eye is breaking down? .. alot of What ifs!

Cold tea is fabulous for mild conditions to calm it down, alot of ppl use it in cat flu, and works wonders, but won't do anything for your pony.

Get her checked asap if I were you x

I agree, actually, with everything you've said. And if it were my horse then the vet would have been out by now. But there does seem general reluctance nowadays by posters to seek professional help.

Re golden eye ointment - yes, you can get it from boots - and would need to be buy a couple of tubes.

Amy - was I right?? Is it Chloramphenical? It's great you can buy it yourself from chemists now, such a safe antibiotic and given to babies etc, we use it so much in the vets, its great you can pick it up for mild conjunctivitis for a few quid.
 
HAHA... put it in your first aid kit too!! Just googled it, yep its chloram! :-) if you go to the drs with conjunctivitis will cost you a prescription, £7.40?? so defo worth getting it over the counter!
 
Right thats it!!!!!!! Next time I get conjunctivits I am sending you a private message to poke yourself in the eye to go drs and get free meds and you can post to me!!!!!!!!
