Have just gone to put the boys back out and have found the Hipo to have a swollen eye! Actual eye appears fine, and but underneath and his eyelid are clearly swollen. No discharge, have yet to have a good look to see if there is something in his eye though.

In others opinions, does this warrant the emergency vet or do you think waiting till tomorrow AM would be ok?

In an ideal world I’m not wanting another vets bill… just having the little one PTS last week will probably be enough but equally don’t want to risk his eye!
It’s been extremely hot today, lots of flies but never this reaction?!

Thank you both, will give them a ring once I’ve had a good look under his lids and taken a better photo (had to resize that one to post!)

Eyes are always an emergency!
There could be a foreign body in there or could be uveitis or a scratch on the cornea.
I appreciate no one wants vet bills but please ,.at least call for advice.
And please do not try any home remedies on it !

Thanks all, I took the advice on board and gave the vet a call- she reckoned it might be ok to wait till the morning but I could pop up and get some anti inflammatory for him tonight- I asked if I could just bring him with me and she could have a quick look, she was happy with that so we went a wee jolly up to the horsepital where she had a look at his eye properly and gave him some Danilon/steroid eye drops. Reckons he has bashed it off something or itched it… some boy!! But bless him he is such good boy being lugged into a trailer at 9pm to get his eye checked out! Can’t wait for the bill next month- thinking maybe a rocking horse would be a better investment for the future!!
