I got to the yard this evening and my mare has quite a swollen weepy eye. I could see it was red/sore/swollen under her eyelids but I have never experienced this before so hope I did the right thing.
I cleaned it up as best I could without fiddling with it too much and wiped it with some eye cream (not too sure what make it is as it wasnt mine) and i put a fly mask on her for tonight to keep the flys away from it. It isn't bothering her at all, just doesn't look too nice and is weeping quite a lot.

Is there anything else I could do to help it along? It seemed to look like it had gone down a bit after I cleaned it up so I'm hoping its just something that has irritated her!

Any advice would be great :)

If its still there in the morning call a vet. I have a horse we've been through hell with due to eye problems which could potentially have been avoidable had his previous owner acted sooner.
That said, it's probably fly irritation or something simple I just wouldn't risk it myself

Yes that's what I thought, its only come up today so thought if i give it tonight and see how she is! If its still bad in the morning I will give the vet a call.
Just really asking if I did the right thing tonight! Thanks for the reply :)

Mine had a red, weepy eye last week.

Took him to the vet - Turns out he had a Corneal Ulcer. For those who have never had one... Super painful especially when exposed to light :(

He's all fine now, but he has had ointment in his eye 2 times a day for the last week, bute and a flyveil with an eyepatch sewn into it.

Hopefully your mare is ok, but I would def be seeing the vet :)

I always always always call the vet for eyes. Everytime. Personally I don't even leave it overnight as they can go wrong so fast. Have had to have the vet out for eyes a few times and its always been worth calling them out, several scratches to the cornea from one who likes to stick his head where it doesn't belong. And an ulcer on another which there had been no sign of the day before not even a tiny scratch visible to the naked eye. I always check so carefully too. You don't mess around with eyes

I went to the yard this morning and its all back to normal! Swelling has gone :)
Its a tiny bit weepy but then I guess that is natures way of flushing it out!
I have called the vet anyway and I am just waiting for a call back to discuss what to do with it just to make sure it is all clean and to make sure I dont do the wrong thing!

Dolly occasionally gets this. We think it's an irritation to something plant or hay related - like she may get a seed or a grain of something in her eye.

We bathe her eye, and then use a cream - "Fucithalmic" which the vet prescribed for us.

However, I believe the cream is quite easy to obtain online (not sure I would though).

We've never (touches wood) had an occasion where it's not 100% better by the following day - if that happens we'll get the vet out again.

Also a fly mask in the field is a good idea. She's not bothered by flies but it keeps the pollen and bits of whatever her eye doesn't like out of her eyes!

Hope that helps x

My horse sometimes gets it if he rubs his eyes too much or bangs his eye when scratching his head on a post.

I always flush it out then keep a close watch on it. If it's not gone back down within 12 hours I'd call the vets. From now on he always has a fly mask on to prevent rubs or irritations

Glad she's ok :)

I just spoke to the vet and explained what had happened, she is quite happy that as long as I keep it clean and keep a close eye on it (excuse the pun :o) there will be no need for her to come out as she said if she was in pain at all the eye would be shut and it isn't.
Also the swelling has gone down and barely weeping at all so we agreed there wouldnt be much to look at!
Just going to get her some drops to use for a few days and see how we get on, Thanks for all the advice :)
