Swollen eyes - flies!! Antihistimine??

My poor boy....I moved to Wales a few weeks ago and he's been suffering really badly with the flies - honestly never seen horse flies like it....I'm covered in bites too. So I ordered him the silver line fly rug from Derby House with the face mask and he's been wearing it. Not had the fly mask on for a few days and now his eyes are a bit swollen and runny.

What are peoples experiences of dealing with this? Can you give a antihistimine? I've put his fly mask back on and hopefully it will stay on. I don't want to start poking around or bathing his eyes if they are already sore - I wasn't sure if he's rubbing his face on his leg or anything.....nasty nasty flies.

Cue one garlic horselyx in the field tonight as well................
 
Normally the symptoms subside after the fly mask is back on. I did years ago have a very sensitive gelding who got swollen eyes from flys and any fly mask managed to rub him, in the end we conquered the problem with a natural fibre fly fringe. I tried antihistimine with a mare I have recently (she had a lump come up on her face which we suspected may be an allergic response to something). We had to call the vet in the end and it turned out to be a traumatic injury but he said that antihistamines are notoriously ineffective in horses. Hope he recovers soon.
 
Iv got a huge problem with horse flys as well. My horses are all in by day and out by night. Iv cleared the eyes up by cold tea without the milk and bath the eyes in it. Works a treat
 
My filly suffers terrible with flys round her eyes, they either swell up or she loses the pigmentation, she is on 10 piriton every day (vet said to give it to her every day all summer) and she has to wear a fly mask all day every day, one day off and her eyes are all puffy, two days off and the pigment is gone, good luck.
 
My lad gets very sore eyes if I leave his mask off. They swell and the red bit gets very red if you know what I mean. I use cold teabags to bathe them with and they are back to normal the next day.
 
Another vote for cold tea bathing...I thought it was an old wives tale but seems to help. Does anyone know why or what it is in tea that makes it good for such things?
