Just seeking some advice... After going hunting on Friday, which we only do once a year, I noticed my horse had a squidgy lump around 15 cm long behind his bottom lip, then the following morning it appeared that his glands round his jaw had swollen up too. After googling, it sounded like either grass glands or strangles but seeing that he wasn't on the grass for the whole day and the night before and that he's had his strangles jabs I can rule them out. I was just wondering if it's possible that as my horse is usually bitless but has to wear a bit for hunting, that this would cause it? Only thing I can think of! It's still the same this morning so if its no better tomorrow I think I'd better call the vet, but as it's not causing him any pain and he's still eating (he has a runny nose and a bit slobbery) I'll wait and see how he goes. Thanks in advance x

Could he have a thorn or similar someplace in the skin in his face... A horse I know was lame two days after hunting , nothing could be seen, but at the vet hospital on day 3 they found a small blackthorn just behind his knee, it had started to go septic. He spent 4 days in hospital on drip. Give his head and neck a good examination. Just in case something is lurking there.

Was interested when I read your post because I did not know much about the vaccination, so I have just read up on it. It seems that like the rabbit jab for mixy it reduces the risk rather then means that they can not catch it. It is very unlikely that the horse does have strangles but not impossible so I would react like it was. Just in case, better safe then sorry.
