Swollen hind limb under joint *Please read*

Hi,

my horse tripped the other day in trot when she was turning the corner and dramatically lifted her left hind limb up in pain. My OH who was riding dismounted and walked her forwards, then trotted her while I watched for lameness. She wasn't lame or sore. We kept her in for 2 days the turned her out yesterday. She didn't display any symptoms of lameness, swelling or pain whilst in her stable or in the field and was happy to walk, trot and canter both in the field and in the menage.

I rode her today and she was fine in walk and in trot for about 1 lap of the menage. However after we had been trotting for a few laps she did the same thing as before and lifted up her leg in pain (I pressume it is in pain). I dismounted and trotted up in the menage and she is sound.

She had a tiny amount of swelling around the area of the deep digital flexor tendon and digital cusion for about 10mins after I dismounted but she had no swelling when I took her out to her field about 30mins later (she had been standing in her stable eating).

She passed a 5* vetting 3 months ago and I'm guessing the vet would have picked up anything major. I was wondering what people's opinions on what is wrong with her are? She is a 9yr old, 15.1hh TB. She raced 7 times before I bought her and I have re schooled her over the last 7 months, doing hacking, SJ, DR and ODE.

Hi, I would get the vet out, mainly as I found out my new horse has got a ruptured ligament from a kick. I know yours wasn't kicked but mine was sound with very little swelling initially and only 3 weeks later did he go lame, although did have a small amount of swelling the 2 weeks previously. So now - I would def get vet out than risk it getting any worse?
It will put your mind at rest and avoid any complications. keep us posted and good luck!
 
Agree with above, get the vet out to be sure. Tendons can be damaged very quickly. My mare had a bad tear to her DDFT and this was only found by MRI. If you have found a little swelling there could well be something going on but in the early stages.

Thanks for everyone's replies. We have decided to put her on box rest for 2 weeks and give her 'Devils Claw'. We will then see how she is and re assess the situation (and get vet if neccessary).

I checked her leg today after she had been in the field all day and walked back along the road to her stable and there was no heat and very minimal swelling.. hmm.. I really have no idea what's happened!
