Maybe the OP would get a vet out to their own horse, but wasn't sure if they would have been over-reacting and therefore wanted more advice before acting or approaching the other horse's owner?
This is more complicated than it appears. Suffice to say I don't think telling lilym what she already knows should be done is necessary. It may be that she has taken an opportunity to get the views of a large number of horsey folk in order to support her in what she is trying to achieve. I believe she cannot say anymore on an open forum.
and i would be landed with a hefty bill - NO WAY I have my own to look after and that is tight enough thanks YO is on the case anyway - I posted to gauge opinions as owner was saying we were worrying about nothing...I will be printing the post and leaving it in a very prominant place...no names mentioned on thread so nothing they can do....
As I said if you don't get anywhere call a welfare organisation for advice as under the law owners have to seek veterinary care for their animals when needed.
Thanks...I don't see why people are jumping on me!! It's now between YO and owner.....they are the ones with duty of care. And I also wanted to know if anyone had come across anything like it before...I haven't in over 20 years.....and I couldn't edit the other post - not that I have to justify myself.
Not getting at you but can you not get yo to bang there head against a very hard wall? If i wa you i would ring welfare org and let them know that the owner was not willing to do anything about this situation and hopefully nothing happens to poor animal and they get a real bollocking
Perhaps the best thing to do would be to ring the vets emergency line, tell the on call vet the situation and give the vet the owners contact details. No doubt that the vet will ring the owner and insist that he comes to see the horse and explain to the owner that it could be fatal.
Or ask the YO to do this

I'd do more than bang the owners head off a wall - I can assure you.....I will be contacting relevant authorities if not resolved...mind you YO takes no [****]....
Really glad to hear this lilym. but please tell me somone has called a vet out or this horse could be toast.surely yo could just call one out for it. I really hope this person doesnt have to learn a harsh lesson about being blase concerning poor pony health
well I think its going to be contagious aswell if any of the other horses on the yard have any cuts etc you are going to have to be very careful.
please note this is a very remote diagnosis and I'm not a vet. its just something that rung a bell with me.
i have tried to get some more detailed scientific papers on it but it isn't giving in tonight to let me have them. I didn't realise that cellulitis/gas gangrene seems to poss be linked, from what I can briefly tell poss slightly different causative agents.
