I posted on here a while back now about my pony having a swollen chin ( under where his teeth are) He has been for xrays showing a tiny line on his jaw bone to one tooth. I was told antibiotics and bute for 3 wks should clear it as it looks like the beginning of an infection. It is 3 weeks in 3 days time... the lump has gone down but has now hardened and is still visible! I will get the vet back out and he will most likely go for bone scans! Any opinions on whether I should get a dentists opinion as well?? It has been suggested by a few people?? But as not much is visible by the vet and sedation would be required for the dentist to perform anything would it be worth it? Am open to any suggestions. :) thanks for reading.

It does sound more like an infected tooth. My horse has just had a tooth out for this. But she's fine now. She just has a bloody big hole in her mouth! Hope your horse is ok.

I'm guessing by bone scans this will involve a referral to an equine hospital? If so, there will be a qualified dentist there anyway. Definately stick with the vet on this one.

I bought Felix last year and he had a large lump on his jaw. It had been an absess earlier in the year, had been treated by vet and he now has a permanent hard lump on his jaw. He'll never be a show horse or pass a vetting but he's great for what I want. It doesn't affect him. he is only 4 now and will be backed this year. Obviously his value has been considerably reduced by this but I couldn't have afforded him otherwise! :D

You can just see the lump in the photo. (More photos in my albums)

Thank you so much for the replies everyone :) it has put my mind at rest that I am doing the right thing with the vet. I will ring them again tomorrow and see what advice she gives next. He has already spent a nght at hospital so it looks liker more nights will be needed, thank god for insurance.
Snoozinsusan your horse is gorgeous a real cutie.. it looks similiar to my ponies lump except mines a bit smaller and it could well be exxactly the same and stay there. :)

This might sound strange, but could he have something under his skin? Benson came up with a lump under his jaw years ago. vet came out and thought it was an infected tooth, so had antibiotics and it cleared. As soon as we stopped with antibiotics it came back up. After scans we found he had a blackthorn just under his skin, had that dug out and he was fine.
