When i brought my gelding tonight i noticed he had a swollen knee.
Front off side ( technically his wrist )
No obvious cuts but someone at the yard informed my that they had been playing and a few other horses had bites and cuts.

Its soft fluid swelling, slightly more on the inside.
Hes not obviously lame, although i was on my own trying to trot him up!

I've left him into night and will call the vet first thing but wanted your thoughts.

Nothing serious?
I hope!

Difficult to say without seeing it really but Che did something similar last autumn, came in from his paddock hopping lame, as he is turned out alone I assume he twisted himself acting like a racehorse! I made him a small, flat paddock with electric fencing so he could stay out and keep moving and twice a day I applied a cold compress by bandaging around above and below the knee with a stable bandage I had soaked in very cold water. I left this on whilst I poo picked and faffed about, so about half an hour each time. He had a sachet of bute twice a day and was kept occupied with lots of grass so he didnt race around. Within a week he was right as rain.

I know the swelling could get worse from being in but i was also worried abiyt him being out.
Yes i can make him a small area in age field but he does not stress and wants his mates.
I didnt give him but as i want to see what happens.

My thoroughbred gets the same thing in his right front knee. While I've had him the top inside of the leg and knee has swollen slightly however he hasn't been lame yet although he did come in slightly sore the other week but trotted up fine. I suspected it was because there is a new horse in his field and he is always fighting. I just hosed it and gave him a few days rest on it the first time it occurred but made sure he got out and walked around on it, rather in the field or the horse walker. He is know fine on it and working well however I would be interested in hearing what the vet has to say I you don't mind?
Does your horse trip at all when walking or display any weakness of the knee?

My gelding is s tb too!
Will let you know what he vet says
When i have spoken to him later.
Ive just been to yard this morning and there is no change, no bigger or smaller and still not or very tiny bit lame. Hard to tell when on my own!
I was very tempted to put him out as i agree, moving around to get rid of the fluid.
But i thought i would play it safe and keep him on until i have spoken to the vet.

Funny you say about stumbling, last week he did stumble a few time but i hoped it was the lack or grass we have and him being a bit
Lethargic, he seemed better at the end of the week as I've been bringing him in for a few hours to eat hay !

one of mine had a swollen knee but no lameness. I normally get vet for every little thing but I didn't on this occasion I just ignored it and within 48 hours it was gone
I realise I was lucky and it could have been something that needed treatment, but I just wanted you to know that sometimes they just mess around and tweak something with no long term problems :D

Finally got hold of vet, he said turn out as he's doesn't seem lame or sore just keep an eye on it and he could see it in a few daysbif still no change.
I forgot to mention the stumbling though :-$

Oh okay, we'll I hope that his knee gets better! The vet did look at my horses as she came out for another reason but also told me to keep an eye on it like you. I just thought that the stumbling for mine was because he has really long legs and maybe his feet are to heavy for him at times.
