Hello again. I've posted a few times this week about my horse being kicked on mon. Vet was out on thurs and gave me anti b's and danilon. He was kicked at the top of his frontleg at the back, the swellin then moved down his leg. Today it is above and below his knee; at the top of the tendon on the outside.

Would you be worried about the swelling at the top of his tendon?

He's currently sound, and happy in himself. The swelling isn't really warm at all. He still has 2 days of anti b's to go.

Thanks.

If the swelling is anywhere near the tendon then I would be very cautious. Potentially giving the horse a fair amount of rest to ensure no damage to tendon or sheath before working again.

He's on box rest with two walks in hand a day. wont ride him till the swellings gona and hes had a few days off after that.
Couldn't get through to the vets on phone to ask today.

Can the swelling on the tendon cause major problems??

the kick is to the back on the front leg at the top. theres no swelling there now, as it had went down a fair bit and moved down his leg. the vet said that was ok? the swelling is now above and below his knee, but only on the outside of his leg. So the outside 'side' of his tendon is swollen at the top ( the part just under the knee).
sorry if this is no use im rubbish at trying to explain things

It does make a difference which tendon is involved, in terms of general prognosis. From your description it isn't clear which one you mean.
It sounds like the swelling is either new, or because the general swelling has gone & highlighted the injured area more specifically. Your vet will be interested I imagine in swelling around a tendon. You may need to get a scan to see whether there is any damage.

I was always told a frozen plt of peas, gamgee first frozen peas 2nd stable bandage 3rd, leave on till the peas started to defrost (makes good pea soup) for 2 or 3 days brings swelling down alot. And you could make up several pots of pea soup can give the receipe

Sorry, im no good at trying to explain things. I'm not good with names of tendons. All i know is that theres swelling under the knee so there is swelling on the outside lower front leg. Thought that was where the tendons were?

I've had such a rubbish year re horses, roll on 2010.

the pea soup cheered me up.

thanks.

The best ive been able to do is hose for 15 mins at a time 2-3 time a day. Then again, the water is rather chilly at the moment. But the bag of peas is a good idea! Shall use it.

Was also advised arnica by another member on here for swelling. Obviously not near the cut

I really think the swelling you are describing is completely normal. it is normal after a kick for the leg to well quite considerably - I've had one where it was a suspected break it looked that bad (but it turned out not to be) and it is normal for the swelling to move down the leg - with gravity. it's if the swelling moves up the leg that you really need to worry!!

It can talk several days to go down...

If the horse is still sound, I really wouldn't be too concerned but it is always worth calling your vet if you're unsure!

Ah, thanks for reply. It's put my mind to rest a bit.

The swelling was much less today, slightly fluidy/ puffy on the front of the knee and still a slight bit aove and below knee, but no heat at all.
