Hi - my TB came in with a bit of a swollen knee about 3 weeks ago. not really any heat at all. Went down a bit. Not lame in the slightest. Vet was down to check something else and didnt mention it at all. Its gone back up to what it was before (not massively swollen but bigger than the other one for sure). We did a dressage comp at the weekend. Fine. Touch it causes no pain. have cold hosed it and put tendon cooling gel on it after riding. He is known for being silly in the field and play fighting (although not so much lately)... Any ideas what it might be?

Suppose it's better speaking to your vet if you have any concerns.

Where abouts is the swelling exactly?

A swelling to knee can be there for months without it necessarily being serious, however, depending on the type of injury, soft tissue injury, bone fracture, strain etc I'd have it checked out for safe measure, a knee injury can be one of the more serious types of joint injuries to a horse.

I'd keep cold hosing and put a cold press on it while ever there is heat there and rest him, until you have the vet to check it out, if the swelling has come up again after going down when the horse has been worked, even if he's not lame, I'd say that is a sign the horse needs rest, sounds like it could be a strain, your horse may require some anti inflammatorys and a bit of box rest.

Had vet out today. She said nothing to worry about?! And to just keep cold hosing. There is no heat though. It never fully went down......

My horse bashed his knee about 6mths ago, and is left with a slight puffiness, he sounds similar to yours, no heat and is sound, is eventing with no problems.

Thanks - I think I worry too much and look on the internet too much and worry is its a hairline fracture!! He is totally sound. when I touch it or hold a cold pack against it he takes no notice and he is one sensitve horse! :)
