Yesterday I noticed some scabs on his fetlock/ heel on his front leg. Now this evening the same leg is swollen and he has a few scabs all the up to his knee. They are quite sticky scabs if you know what I mean! I washed his leg with hibiscrub yesterday and put some gel on the scabs. Doesn't look like mud fever ect. Any ideas what this could be could it be cellulitis? Thanks

Yes, could be cellulitis but if there's already swelling there's probably already some pain.

Speak to the vet about giving bute or alternative before they arrive if they aren't there to see him this evening.

Mine struggled to get the swelling down for a long time after but Hilton Herbs Cleaver and Marigold as well as red light therapy for the scabs got us there but it wasn't a speedy recovery; it took a couple of months before he looked normal again.

You need to be extra careful to make sure his bed is well draining and he always has a dry layer on top.

The ones up his legs aren't really scabs it's just this weird gooey stuff nothing underneath. The ones on his fetlocks are scabs.

Okay thank you. Would you call out vet this evening? I've got 1 sachet of bute left but don't like to give him bute unless it's absolutely necessary, as he has had ulcers and they come back really quick if he has bute. He doesn't seem in pain at all but doesn't mean he isn't. Thank you glad yours is okay now.

Is he still moving freely? Mine had a previous bout of it about 9 years earlier, although this was in mid winter. Hopefully early vet treatment will get yours sorted quickly.

sorry I didn't let you know this morning, have had a busy day! The vet doesn't seem too worried, has given me some gel too put on and some filtaback. Then I have to wrap his legs in cling film then stable bandage them, this is done twice daily. She also said its strange to see this in a older horse who hasn't had it before and who is also grey. Hopefully he will be OK ?

That sounds good. I'm using Filtabac on mine this year for the first time, he is 21!

Over the past couple days I've left him out 24/7 with soaked hay. The vet said it's better for him too move around.. he does have pulses in his legs one more than the other, but only in the 2 he has the scabs/ swelling. Will the thing he has cause the pulses, (sorry can't remember the name she called it!) Thanks
