Swollen leg

my 2 year old came in from the field yesterday with a swollen hind leg. I cleaned his leg and found a graze which was only on the surface of the skin so cleaned all with povidone and put sudocream on the graze. I checked him again this morning and his leg still appears slightly swollen.. any advice pls. I havent called the vet yet but will do so if i need to..
 
abby grazed her leg the other week, rug incident. her leg was swollen but there was no heat she wasn't lame or anything we colded hosed is for 20 mins for 2 nights when she came in from the field on the 3rd night looked like it had never even been puffy. when we clean her graze we put iodine on it and sprayed it with blue spray to keep out infecion.

mum spoke to the vet over the phone, they said it was best for her to be out to keep the blood circulating, and since there was no other issues it would most likely get better by itself, which it did.

thay did say tho that we could bandage it at night to keep it warm, if we felt it needed it (we didn't)
 
Ace thanks for the response. I cold hosed it when i washed it down last night will do the same tonight and see what its like tomorrow. Hopefully that will take the swelling down there didnt appear to be any heat in it so that should do the trick..
 
i had this same problem last summer. my mare had a tiny cut which i didnt notice. when i eventually found it i cleaned it and bandage the leg so it stopped the infection rising upwards. this made all the infection drain out of the cut. when down in no time.
 
Yep same thing happeneed to me! i rang the vet and just said slight swelling and little graze and they let me have some antibiotics just to be on the safe side so avoild an infection.
 
Some horses just swell really easily. Mine certainly does. If he has any tiny trauma to the leg, it will fill every night for a couple of weeks.

I would do exactly what you have done, although you haven't mentioned if he is lame or not?
 
Thumper's legs swell very easily - and often fill overnight. Having mud fever at the moment is not helping, and when not bandaged his legs are quite puffy after being stood in at night.

However, they always go down with exercise or turnout. As long as your boy's do as well then I wouldn't be inclined to worry. If he comes in from the field tonight with a swollen leg you may need some antibiotic help....
 
well we have some typical TB's who alwaus come in from the field with a pathetic graze that will swell up like no tomorrow and what we do it always keep it clean other wise mud can dry on the surface and it can become inffected and hard to handle, run it down with cold water as this will beat the swelling out of it, never directly on the cut, just around and on the swelling, we usually apply conotrane. And we buy bute from the vets if it does not go down in a matter of 2-3 days. Batheing it might be an option as this might draw all the puss and stuff out off it but we only seldom do that as it can make the cut sore and tendor for quite a while. But both are options...hope he gets better:):)
