Hello,
Ruby was kicked in the field on Sunday morning. She wasn't lame and no swelling appeared, however she did cut herself. It wasn't deep, so I didn't get the vet out. Got her in and washed the wound with salt water, purple sprayed and put sudocrem on top of that and then turned her back out. She stayed out Sunday night. Went up Mon morn to check her over and there was so heat or swelling, Purple sprayed the wound and then left for work. Yesterday we had to get them in overnight due to the weather. Still no swelling and she was walking normally, put her to bed and purple sprayed the area again. This morning when I went up however, her leg was swollen. She has always suffered with swollen joints after being stabled and always walks them off. There was no blood or pus on the wound and it looks to be healing nicely. It was warm though. Asked another livery to watch me walk and trot up and we both think she looks fine and is bearing weight on it. Turned her out in the hope that she will walk the swelling off.
What what you do next?
I was thinking if she comes in tonight and the leg is still swollen, I will cold hose and clean wound. If it is still bad tomorrow or worse call the vet for advice or ask him to come out and take a look.
If she comes in and it isn't swollen, I may just do the above anyway and hope it doesn't swell up overnight.
