I'm posting this on behalf of a friend of mine. She has a hanoverian filly rising 3, she lives out as always gets cast in the box. This summer she had terrible capped hocks. Then she took ill with the bad weather and now my friend has sent me this email.

'I have big problem with filly first she is on antibiotic for cold, now she has 1 huge leg behind and now 1 in front dioganal legs, I bandage and walk her round but no change, vet says its circulation problem, but its strange diagonal pair, I just hope its not thrombosis as ther seems to be alot of horses with this problem at moment, and not surviving, very worying problem'

My friend is a very experienced horsewoman, has been working with horses for over 25 years, so she knows her stuff. Just seems this has got her stumped. I haven't been to see the filly but if anyone thinks they might know whats up I can pass on questions etc.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Very odd. Never heard of a diagonal pair being swollen before, and can't see how that would be linked to a circulatory problem, unless all four legs are filling but for some reason two are going down with exercise.

Is it possible there is a lameness issue with the diagonal pair that are not swollen - and the other pair are compensating, being strained and are hence swollen?

Bit of a long shot, but that is the only thing I can think of.

Sounds like a nightmare to manage!

Would the diagonal pair possibly be white? If so she may have had a reaction to the medication she is on or is developing mudfever. Your friend could try washing the legs with Nizeral which will kill off the early stages of mudfever.

Also if filly has been cast in the past then a chiropractor may need to look her over for any damage done while she was struggling to get up again.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will pass on and see what my friend thinks. Anyone else come across this before?

Evelyn - she has no white on her at all, she's all bay (gorgeous filly!).
