I moved my 2 onto their summer field 1st June they live out and today my mare has all 4 legs swollen, there was no heat and didnt seem to bother her/not lame just fluid. After riding they have gone back to normal.
This is not normal for her to have swellings on her legs, she doesn't have windgalls or anything. The only thing changed other than the grass is I started giving her naf oestress a few days a go but I can't imagine it would be that? Any ideas much appreciated before I panic call the vet!

If it had been just the front legs I would have suggested laminitis as that was one of factors that made me realise that something was wrong. Because he wasn’t moving around much in the field, his front legs had filled.

It could be too much protein - fresh grazing plus some rain = grass being richer?

My mare had this happen and the vet said no hard feed and stable overnight with hay. As the grass became less rich she was able to go back out 24/7.

This in buckets. DP is out in a muzzle for only 4 hours a day at the moment due to the rain, sugar and short grass. Any longer and his sheath swells massively. Restricted grazing, soaked hay and plenty of exercise is the key.

Thanks for the replies, I struggle to keep weight on her so after the winter I just let her go to town on the grass, will cut the feed down for sure

My mare used to get this and agree it's likely to be excess protein in the grass. My vet advised to keep moving if possible rather than standing in. Could you put her in the manege or somewhere without much grass.
