Hey people, just after a bit of advice and wondered if anyone’s horses have been through something similar..
Went to turn my horse out yesterday and all his legs were like balloons! He was walking ok, and went into the field and after a few hours still no change.. Vet came out and said its either a reaction to something (although he is on restricted grassing with no grass) or a virus.. He has started a course of anti biotics and bute.. Vet said to ring if they were still the same this morning.. they were. Vet said they can give him steroid injections to reduce the swelling but this carries a risk of laminitis. I am a bit worried about this, but also just worried to leave them as they are! Plan at the moment is to leave him until 3pm and see how his legs are...
Any feedback/advice appreciated!!!

Is his field wetter than usual due to the rain? My mare's legs all swoll up last Oct and she could barely walk. Got vet out who gave injection for pain and told us to bandage to reduce the swelling and box rest her. He took bloods and said it was most likely to much protein in the diet. Vet came out again the next day to give her a further injection and she was on bute for a week or two. But I noticed that any time her legs got wet they went up so I think it was mud fever without the cuts, she was also turned out in a very wet field before her legs went up. Anyway she was back to normal after a week or so of bandaging and bute :) Hope your boy gets better soon x

Mine did this the other week, we put it down to a change in the fly spray I was using, thoroughly washed and shampoo'd legs down and stopped using it. took a few days to go down but they did very slowly. All four legs were huge and didn't go down when in field before this. (can;t be worked at moment as on paddock rest)

My horse came in with fat legs Monday he lives out 24/7 was shocked they where so big, called vet said to put on one bute a day, was hand walking round field and hosing but they just kept getting bigger going upto his hocks and very hot, horse had temp vet came out and said he has infection first he said virus! Today is the first day they have gone down with 2bute and antiboitics a day, hope your horse is better today !!

thanks for the replies.. luckily they had started to go down in the afternoon so no steriods needed... he finishes his anti biotics tomorrow and they look back to normal :)
am so relieved :) vet said it was a virus...

My horse had thick legs yesterday, I thought maybe she had been standing in all night as it was raining all night. I rode her and she was fine, just had a brisk walk round the block and they were normal on return. They were back up again last night. It must be down to the wet weather somehow. It happened on one leg in the last really wet weather but once it had gone down it didn't come back

Mine lives out, just has shelter access. They were still up today but went down after exercise. I think its something in the particular paddock shes in.
