I moved my horse to a new field on Sunday evening...

The vet came up on Sunday and due to a splinter in his neck - gave me a 5 day course of antibiotics.

On day 2 his back legs have gone very swollen and hot.

Do you think this could be a reaction to the antibiotics - or could it be the grass he is on?

Surely if a horse has swollen back legs the first thing a vet would give you is a course of antibiotics?

Are the legs filled rather than swollen? Too much protein in the grass can cause filled legs. If this is the case, walking the horse (a nice long hack if he's sound) and restricting the grazing will reduce the filling.

Talk to your Vet, they will know if the particular anti-b that you have is known to cause swollen legs or not.

Yes they are - thank you for your help - i think i wil take him off this grass and put him back in his old field and monitor his legs over the next few days...
